BSYL - Yr 6 - 21st January

This weekend saw the fabulous year 5's ride to the rescue of an under-strength year 6 squad.

The Greens won an end-to-end clash with Brislington JFC, with the result in doubt until the final whistle. Brislington took an early lead when a good passing move was well finished but the the Foxes struck back almost immediately with a flowing break-away goal, expertly finished by Omar. The Foxes extended their lead before half-time through Henry and Joseph. In the second half Brislington came into the game as we tired and created a number of good chances. The Foxes were indebted to their Danny who pulled off a string of good saves, allowing the home team to hold on for a hard fought 3-1 victory.

The Whites played the Buccaneers Reds and an exciting game with chances at both ends saw the Buccaneers come out on top. We started slowly and the Reds created and took two early chances to put them in front. When we began to settle, Sonny was unlucky on at three occasions to hit the post or crossbar. The Reds extended their lead just before half-time when a fine long range shot came down off the bar to be stabbed over the line. The second half saw both teams play good attacking football, forcing both keepers into fine saves. Another Reds' goal, after a fine save from Owen again rebounded kindly for the Reds, took the score to 4-0. The Foxes never gave up and scored two great late goals from Sonny and Raul, with a brilliant header.

Year 6 Fountains Trophy Cup - 14th Jan

On a frosty pitch, Westbury Park Foxes Greens edged past Buccaneers FC Whites in the preliminary round of the U11s Fountains Trophies Cup. With both sides coping well with the conditions and playing some good passing football the match remained 0-0, until with ten minutes to go Danny Wistow fired a shot in from the left which wriggled past the unlucky Buccaneers' keeper and took the Foxes into the lead. The Buccaneers kept pushing hard for the equaliser but stout defending from the Foxes saw them through to the final whistle for a deserved victory.

Y2 v Bishop Road (H)

A return fixture against Bishop Road, on a blustery Saturday morning. We split the squad into two teams, and played two matches.

The 'reds' found it tough going in the first half with the wind against them. The two teams were fairly evenly matched and creating chances was difficult. Just before half time, though, Bishop Road took the lead with a fine shot into the far corner. In the second half, the game flowed from end to end with outstanding contributions from Jacob and Jess. Bishop Road added a second goal with a few minutes to go when their striker was in the right place at the right time following a fine save by Alex, for what was a well-deserved victory.

In the 'blues' game, both teams also found the conditions made fluid football dificult. In the second half, with the wind behind them, the Foxes took the lead when Samuel broke free of the defence and dispatched the ball into the top corner giving the goalkeeper no chance. Mid-way through the half, Acer made it 2-0 after a Messi-like run and the Foxes ran out comfortable and happy winners.

So, despite the conditions, two enjoyable and rewarding games, and it was fitting that the day would end with the honours even.

Y2 v Rockleaze Rangers (A)

Goodison Park (1966), Istanbul (2005), and now Coombe Dingle (2012). Classic games featuring a great comeback - and our draw against Rockleaze Rangers topped the lot. To come back from 3-0, and 5-1 down to force a draw eclipses the other games (they only featured 0-3 combacks) and was a truely memorable performance.

The Foxes travelled to Rockleaze Rangers with some trepidation, as we had lost to them in December. The 'red' team started well but the strong Rangers team soon took control and by half time had built up the 5-1 lead through some outstanding finishing, with Acer scoring the only Foxes goal.

At the turn-around, a change in tactics to strengthen the midfield saw the Foxes wrestle back control. An early goal by Samuel restored confidence and was quickly followed with a second by Acer. Samuel scored again and it was all Foxes. Rajiv and Tom were winning everything in midfield and Xabi, Danny and Leo confidently dealing with everything in defence . Samuel scored the fourth, and unbelievably with the last kick of the game, Acer smashed home a well-deserved equaliser - a fantastic game, with a great ending. The most pleasing aspect was the way the whole team just didn't give up - just like 1966 (look it up) and 2005 (you probably know this one).

The 'blue' team gave an equally spirited performance, again against a very strong team. Despite a mainly rear-guard performance, they managed to contain Rockleaze with fantastic defending by Ben (as always), Louis and Jamie, with Noah playing the game of his life in goal - always in the right place and safe handling of the ball. Midfield dynamos Jess and Bonnie ran their hearts out and Kieron played a fairly lonely but battling game up front. A goal in each half settled the game for Rockleaze, but it was a truely commendable performance.

Year 6 - BSYL 7th January

Both the Greens and the Whites were back on the hallowed turf of the Downs as St Ursula's was under water.

The Greens hosted Buccaneers FC Reds and sadly the Buccaneers edged a thrilling encounter 5-4. In an end to end match the Buccaneers opened the scoring with a well taken goal but within minutes the Foxes struck back. The match carried on in the same vein until with 5 minutes to go the Buccaneers scored on the break what proved to be the winning goal. Our goals came from Omar (2), Jack C and Danny.

The coaches were pleased with the effort and delighted with some of our attacking football. The result left something to be desired and some of our tackling gives us something to work on.

The Whites were away against Rockleaze Rangers but ended up on the Downs, with the Foxes prevailing 6-2. It was 2-2 at half time, as close range efforts brought Rockleaze level in response to first half Foxes strikes from Joey Tulloch-Martin and Jacob Gibson. In the second half the Foxes upped their game, passed the ball well and took full advantage of the conditions. Joey Tulloch-Martin completed a hat trick including a spectacular long range free kick, while both Sophie McConnell and Alec Millward finished powerfully after good passing build ups. Rockleaze battled until the end but could not find a way back.

Once the team came to terms with the pitch and the opposition, the Whites played some good stuff in the second half. The big difference was the speed with which we moved the ball and made use of the space available. The whole squad played well and its was a pleasure again to have Sophie and Anna taking part.

Y5 v Rockleaze Rangers and Long Ashton 26 November

Y5 Foxes stutter in three-way fixture against Rockleaze and Long Ashton

The Foxes faced their fourth fixture in as many weeks and the first away games of the season. With Rockleaze only able to muster one team, Long Ashton were invited to join in what was to become a three-way fixture. Like Rockleaze, Long Ashton play league football and turned up with 2 squads. The Foxes saw Billy return to fitness and uncertainty over numbers meant our squad was again bolstered by Monty and Jude from Y4.

Rob’s Squad:
Brody, Matthew, William W, Billy, Eddie, Jarnell, Ewan, Tee-Jay, Joseph, William LP.

Formation for today's games is again 2-3-1 hoping to have a strong mid field, keep it tight at the back and attack quickly using the best forward player as the lone striker.

Match 1
Started the first game with Brodie in goal, Matthew and Billy in defence, Ewan, Eddy and William LP in mid field and Joseph operating as striker.

Result 0-3 to Rockleaze.

Match 2
In the second game against another Rockleaze side Matthew played most of the game in goal. William LP scored twice with Joesph and Eddy also grabbing goals.

Result 4-1 to the Foxes.

Match 3
In the final match against Long Ashton the game was evenly balanced with probably the Foxes slightly deserving a win. However, the result finished 0-0.

Simon’ Squad:
Rohan, Oskar, Jack, Jude, Monty, John, Josh, Stanley, Harrison.

Delays caused by setting up pitches and trying to make sense of who was to play whom, meant that yet again we did not have chance for a proper warm up. Again we started slowly and this time never really got into our stride. Perhaps it was a fixture too far.

Match 1
The first match saw us take on a Long Ashton A squad that consisted of a team of mixed ages, including some that seemed very mature. Long Ashton started very well playing a good passing game with the benefit of the sloping pitch. Rohan was strong in goal, Jack and Oskar secure in defence and John, Josh, Harrison and Stanley provided what should have been a potent attack. But something did not quite click. Perhaps we were put off by new and bigger opposition. Whatever happened, we seemed to hesitate when we would normally challenge strongly. We also stuttered to get our passing and flowing attacks going. In the first half we went behind to a soft goal when Long Ashton took a corner and we were caught ball –watching. We improved in the second half and could have scored on several occasions including a long strike from Harrison that whistled over bar with the goalkeeper beaten. Rohan made some good saves and everyone pulled together but it was frustrating to see us lose against a team we could have beaten.

Result: Foxes 0: Long Ashton 1

Match 2
The second match was against the Long Ashton B squad. Monty took a turn in goal and Jude came on to show another strong midfield display. This time the Foxes played better but again their passing was not as strong as normal. Several chances went begging and frustration crept into the team. Against the run of play, we then went behind when a soft toe-poke from 15 m rolled into the goal. It was a shot Monty would normally have dealt with very easily but had left because Jack had told him to. At least they both saw the funny side of it later. At half time the Foxes all knew that they were the better team but just could not turn pressure into the breakthrough we needed. More chances followed but it was not to be. If last week we nearly thrashed a team 0-0, then this week we nearly thrashed a team 0-1. One we most definitely should have won.
Result: Foxes 0: Long Ashton 1

Match 3
The final match was against one of the Rockleaze Rangers teams. Again it was a team that any other day we would have filled our boots against. Again, we made it really hard work. Rohan and Oskar shared the goalkeeping duties and Monty partnered Jack in defence. John, Jude, Josh Harrison and Stanley took turns to provide our midfield and strike force. Monty deserves a special mention for a fantastic display in defence, snuffing out any attack and always looking to play in to the midfield and attack. The game followed a now familiar pattern of creating plenty of chance but never quite getting the goals we deserved. The only goal of the game came when Rohan crossed for Josh to take a shot. The keeper got in the way but it rebounded and Josh followed up to put it in the back of the net. Not the scoreline we deserved but at last the Foxes got some reward for their hard work.
Result: Foxes 1: Rockleaze Rangers 0

BSYL - Yr 6 - 10th December

The Whites travelled to Golden Hill Sonics to play the league leaders for the second time in quick succession. Again it was a close and thrilling match with the home side coming out 3-2 on top. The Foxes led 1-0 at half time when Sam Lawes shot low in the bottom corner to finish a swift counter-attack. The Sonics equalised early in the second half when their striker was put clean through and finally beat Owen, who again had made some great, often brave, saves. An own goal gave the Sonics the lead shortly afterwards when a byline cutback took a deflection and spun in. Their third goal was created by a beautiful through pass which was well finished.

At this stage, 3-1 really didn't reflect the ebb and flow of the game. We had chances of our own with Joey forcing the very good Sonics keeper into a number of saves. We kept pressing, Joey hit the post and finally Harri scored a well-taken late goal to reduce the deficit, but time ran out, and Golden Hill secured the win.

The Sonics are a good side who play well on the break but over two games the Whites have pretty much matched them and perhaps deserved a point or two. Captain's armband for the next game was awarded to Joey for a hard working and well-disciplined performance.

The Greens hosted Ingleside and in a hard fought contest the visitors were unlucky to go down 11-1. The Foxes came out of the blocks the quickest and took the lead through a fine corner from Ollie C. which was volleyed home by Danny. Jack then provided a fine cross from the left for Danny to score his second. Danny then become provider putting Max through to score. Jack C. then dribbled through 5 players to thump one home from the edge of the box. Ian, who was playing down the right wing, then crossed for Harry to finish well at the near post. Half time. The foxes started well in the second half with Max passing to Danny who passed to Ollie C. who passed to Jack who scored his second. It looked a lot like football. Ingleside scored a good goal on the break and with their heads never dropping looked dangerous and the Foxes were thankful for good work by Archie in goal to not concede another, but a string of goals from Danny, Ollie C. Harry and Jack C. Twice rounded of an 11-1 victory.

The coaches were very pleased with all the squad although we did lose our shape in the second half as we were stretched by boys pushing too far forward trying to get on the score sheet. Jack T. won the captains armband with a faultless display at the back in the second half.

Well done Jack, and all he boys.

Y3/4 Girls March On

A change of match day, and fresh opposition, but the Y3/4 Girls continue to go from strength to strength.
Today we played 2 matches against Bristol Ladies Union away at Coombe Dingle.
Lack of availability had restricted us to just 7 players, one of whom had got out of her sick bed to pull on the gloves and keep goal.
As it was we started our 1st match a player down, but it didn't really affect things as the girls were soon into their stylish passing game. Playing only 1 defender meant that Molly had to do an exceptional job in organising those in front of her, making sure they were all able to get back and help when required.
Lily bossed the midfield and with Ella and Lulu on the wings, Simran was given plenty of service up front.
Betty had relatively little to do in goal, but produced a couple of fine stops, and demonstrated great recycling of the ball.
Eventually the pressure told and the Foxes took a deserved lead, and so the match finished 1-0.
The 2 BLU's teams then played against each other. Due to uneven team numbers Betty stayed in goal and kept a clean sheet for the BLU bibs team, who expressed their thanks at having a 'professional goalie'!
The arrival of Ruby DR brought the Foxes up to full strength, and resulted in a 7-0 victory over the BLU bibs team, including a Hat trick for Sim and a well taken goal for Lily.
It was great to see such control and clever passing throughout the team, who really are coming together as a squad. They thoroughly deserved the result which sees them remain unbeaten.

Y2 v Rockleaze Rangers (H)

A home game to Rockleaze and the first real lesson in organisation and passing given to the young Foxes. Despite this, they didn't stop running and battling for the entire morning.

It was a cold icy morning, with the pitch only being passed fit minutes before kick-off - the puddles on the Downs were still frozen We decided to keep people moving and play two long games of 20 minutes each way.

The 'red' game was one of the most extraordinary that we have played this year. Rockleaze started strongly and should have scored - and would have but for Xabi's heroics in goal. After five minutes, a break on the right by Acer, a perfect cross and a wonderful first-time finish by Samuel gave the excited Foxes the lead. It got better - after another five minutes, Acer again broke free and a cool finish doubled the lead. If only it was 10 minutes a half... Rockleaze came back strongly, and at the half time point had reveresed to two goal deficit to lead 4-2.

The second half continued in the same vein, with Rockleaze passing the ball well, and increased their lead to 7-2, but back came the Foxes! In a 10 minute period, first Acer, then Samuel, and then Xabi got the score back to 7-5. But the comeback of comebacks was not to be and Rockleaze extended their lead to a deserved 11-5 win.

The 'blue' game was run in parallel against an equally strong Rockleaze team. The fact that they played for 40 minutes gave the scoreline a rather inflated feel, but to their credit, the Foxes didn't give up and battled to the end with some strong midfield and defensive performances.

Foxes Yr 5 v Rockleaze away 10th Dec .

The first proper frost of the winter was there to welcome the Foxes at Rockleaze on Saturday.
A good turn out from the boys and we had enough for two strong sides to take on a strong Rockleaze outfit. A pitch inspection meant that kick off had to be delayed so the boys were kept busy with some training drills and fitness work. At last we were given the go ahead to play.

Game 1
A real game of 2 halves with the foxes playing uphill and fighting off an early Rockleare onslaught. Some good defending at the back, with Oscar providing some firm tackles and sending the ball up to our strike force of Josh, Joseph and Harrison. The foxes started testing the Rockleaze defence who stood firm with some excellent defending. Foxes son broke the deadlock with a great corner from Joseph which was volleyed over the defence by Josh and into the goal. This was soon followed up with another goal, starting with a powerful run on the left form Harrison, ball to Josh who crossed to Joseph who had found a great position on the penalty spot to slot in number 2. Our midfield of Jarnell , and William worked hard to keep the ball away from the Rockleaze team, Matthew kept out any threat in defence and when needed TJ was a safe pair of hands in goal.
The second half started brightly for the Foxes with more probing at the Rockleaze defence, however Rockleaze got a goal back with a sublime lob over our unfortunate keeper, Matthew, who stood no chance. Unfortunately this seemed to shake the foxes as the next rockleaze attack resulted in another goal.. The boys showed great character to not let their heads drop and the game played out to a 2-2 draw. A great game to watch.

Game 2
Game 2 was a cracker to watch. 8 a-side meant no subs and some cold , tired foxes played well. It was end to end stuff. 0-0 was the final result, mainly due to some outstanding goal keeping from TJ, who showed a great fearlessness from a lot of Rockleaze attacks. Matthew, who was in goal in the first half made a fantastic save only for the ball to be kicked from his hands and into the net. The ref decided to disallow the goal .Foxes tried hard to score but couldn’t find a way through the Rockleaze defence
2 good results today boys on a cold day. You played well as a team. Remember to keep your concentration and work hard for each other as you will be unbeatable. As always there were many contenders for man of the match. Today Jarnell gets it for his enthusiastic and ever improving skill in midfield and for making a couple of match saving tackles.
Thanks to the parents who remained patient whilst waiting for the pitch to thaw and your ever present support and encouragement for the boys

Rob's Squad: William LP, Jack, Jamie, Caston, Henry, Eddy, Stanley

Game 1

We started with now the familiar starting formation of 2-3-1 with Stanley playing the lone strikers role; Henry centre mid field; Caston and Eddy playing alongside Henry; Jack and Jamie in defence and Willian LP in goal. The Foxes started the game confidently, the midfield working hard to support Stanley when the Foxes were attacking but also backing up Jack and Jamie when the Foxes were called upon to defend. Stanley was proving to be very dangerous up front, always making himself available to receive a quick ball, turning defence quickly into attack, often supported by Henry making surging runs from midfield, whilst Caston and Eddy kept a firm grip in the centre of the park. There were not too many clear cut chances for either side in the first half but Stanley put the Foxes 1-0 up by half time. In the second half, Eddy swpped positions with William LP in goal. Rockleaze were now a little more threatening playing down the slight slope and the Foxes had to defend well. Eddy pulled off a magnificent save to deny Rockleaze and keep the Foxes in front. Conceding a goal could well have seen Rockleasze turn the game around but Eddy's magnificent save seemed to spur on the Foxes , with Stanley scoring his second goal. The thoroughly entertaining game ended Foxes 2 Rockleaze 0.

Game 2
In the second game we changed the goal keeping position again with Henry taking on the goal keeping duties for the first half. This Rockleaze team looked a little stronger than the first, passing the ball well and always streching the Foxes mid field and defence. Perhaps the Foxes were slightly prone to standing off Rockleaze and letting them run with the ball instead of tackling and making their presence felt. Henry played very well in goal but we changed the goal keeper again at half time to bring Henry back in an outfield position to try to strengthen midfield. Caston in particularly was becoming stronger as the game progressed, making some notable runs from mid field and providing great passes for Stanley and Henry to run on to but Willian LP was being kept very busy in goal with Jack and Jamie finding themselves increasingly pegged back in defence. The final score flattered Rockleaze a little with the Foxes loosing 4 goals to nil.

Man of the Match: Caston for putting in two good performances and getting stronger as the games progressed.

Yr 6 - BSYL - 26th November

Two 1-0 defeats but two very different games in terms of Foxes' dominance.

The Whites hosted the Buccaneers Reds and the visitors came out on top in a cracking match. The Foxes had the bare minimum of 7 on the day and the lack of any substitutes told on the players as the game wore on, but every single player tried their hardest until the final whistle. The Reds had the best of the chances and Owen was, again, outstanding. That we only conceded one goal owed much to a string of fine saves, but also to strong defence from Seb and Aidan and really hard work in midfield by Sam and Harri. Isaac had his first full 50 mins for the Foxes and Sonny worked hard up front. The tension increased as the second half wore on and the Reds were prevented from adding to their lead. The Foxes kept on battling and had a few half-chances to capture a point.

While the result was disappointing, the coaches couldn't have been more pleased with the effort shown by the whole squad. Sam was given the captain's armband for the next fixture as recognition for a tireless performance.

The Greens were away to Brislington and were unlucky to lose 1-0 to skillful and well organized opposition. The Foxes started brightly passing and moving and fashioned a great chance for Jack C. which he and others thought that he had scored, but the referee didn't see it that way, waved play on and with the boys still celebrating or questioning the decision, Brislington broke away to score a well taken goal. The Foxes heads didn't drop and continued to dominate the remainder of the first half and on into the second. The Brislington keeper did well to keep to keep out a succession of efforts on goal.

While Brislington were always dangerous on the break they were hanging on at the end and were the team that most wanted the final whistle. This was a game the Greens deserved to win with the boys playing some good football. The coaches could not have asked for any more effort and the whole team should be proud of how they played. Special mention should go to Nick in goal who didn't put a foot wrong and Jack T. who had one of his best games at the back but the Captain's armband was awarded to Ollie C. who capped the last two months of great development with another top-notch display on the right wing.

Y2 v Ashley Down (H)

Our first ever home game and we were very pleased to host Ashley Down. We managed to squeeze in four games, and the fact that only seven goals were scored all morning, showed how tight the games were.

With twenty players in our squad, we split into 'red' and 'blue' teams. Ashley Down had a squad of ten, and so played rolling substitutions.

The Foxes red team started well with Frazer and William dominating midfield. It was Ashley Down's goalkeeper who was by far the busier, but managed to keep the Foxes out and the game goal-less at half time. In the second half, Ashley Down took the lead with a fine shot, but the Foxes came back strongly and Acer gained a draw with a fine run and cool finish.

In the second game, the blues again battled well with a strong midfield battle led by Rajiv and Ben, and would have taken the lead had Samuel's 'goal' from a tight angle which hit the far post and bounced back along the line been awarded. Again it took a fine shot from Ashley Down to secure a 1-0 win.

Ashley Down were by now playing very well with some neat midfield passing (take note, Foxes and Foxes coaches) and were deservedly 2-0 up by half time. A Foxes substitution and change of tactics at half time saw a reversal of the play in the second half. Xabi and Acer took control of the midfield, and after hitting a post (again!), Samuel pulled a goal back after being unleashed by a great through-ball by Acer and as the goalkeeper advanced, a clinical finish. The Foxes were now well on top, but could not quite eek out an equaliser.

In the final match, it was back to a tight tactical game. A great shot from the right winger gave Ashley Down the only goal, but it could have gone either way. Danny made a fine save to keep the Foxes in the game throughout, but it ended 1-0.

Overall Ashley Down were deserved winners with some strong players and good teamwork. The Foxes showed their fighting spirit as always, and with a bit of luck and a more generous referee would have got more in terms of the results. In the Cafe afterwards, the talk amongst the young Foxes was of blind referess and the call for the introduction of goal-line technology...

Y5 Foxes share honours with Shire Colts 12 November 2011

One week on and a completely different set of challenges faced 14 brave Foxes. A week of rain and a reminder to stay off the Down’s pitches meant we had to set up pitches on the undulating terrain of long grassy – far from ideal for our style of fast, flowing football. Whilst a well-drilled SC squad went though their pre-match build up, late arrivals and a few no-shows meant we didn’t know we could field 2 full teams until just before kick off. Shire are probably the best team we play in the friendly league so this was going to be a better measure of how we are doing than previous weeks.

Simon’s Squad - Caston, Jack, Ewan, TJ, Harrison, Stanley, John

Match1

Funny how little moments stay with you. With no-one else to ref, Simon took on the role of referee and, unlike other sides, did not coach the Foxes during play. This was a fixture where the team were to make their own decisions. One minute before kick-off they took it upon themselves to have a team huddle – 7 little Foxes against the world. I was immensely proud.

We set up with everyone playing in familiar roles – Caston in goal, Jack and TJ as sweeper and link-man, John and Stanley in midfield and Ewan and Harrison out wide. Shire attacked from the off and played some attractive passing football, confident of their ability to hold the ball and wait for a passing opportunity. The Foxes competed but had a slow start and we were soon 2 goals behind. Then the Foxes’ spirit took over and the team fought back. Stanley scored the goal of the match with a perfect strike (or was it a lob?) from wide out right. A good SC keeper failed to get anywhere near it. As the game continued, both sides created and saved chances – nothing in it. It was only a Foxes own goal from a penalty area scramble that added to the scoreline. On reflection SC probably deserved their win, but it was marginal.

Match 2

The second match saw the Foxes take on what looked to be Shire’s B team. TJ swapped for Caston and with the Foxes now up to speed, we tore into them from the off. Great saves, intelligent defence, selfless midfield play and skilful attacks meant that the Foxes completely outplayed SC in the first half. Shire had no answer to our pace and determination as Harrison scored the first and John added a second (with Harrison making sure it went over the line). A controversial 3^rd goal followed as a fair tackle from Caston put Harrison through to finish with a great strike. SC parents erupted complaining that the game should have been stopped because their player was on the floor and one of the parents decided to march onto the pitch to give an opinion he should have kept to himself. The second half then became a little tense and somewhat niggly with lots of pulling, foul throws and “accidental “handballs – which were all waved on in a effort to keep the game flowing. The Foxes could and perhaps should have scored three or four more including a crossbar-breaking strike, but it was a good and well-deserved win.

In the knowledge that Shire Colts have a strong quad of players the Foxes were asked to play in a 2-3-1 formation, William W and Matthew played in defence, William LP, Henry and Jamie in midfield, Josh playing alone up front and Rohan in goal. The game kicked off to a flurry of good accurate passing from Shire Colts which pegged the Foxes back in their own half but the Foxes eventually started to find their game. Josh was excellent at receiving the ball and holding off defenders until support from Henry or William LP arrived. The first goal of the game came from an accurate corner from Henry to the near post where William LP managed to flick the ball past the advancing Shire Colts keeper. The Foxes continued to look dangerous, Henry and William LP breaking very fast from midfield to support Josh up front. A second goal for the Foxes looked on the cards but it was Shire Colts who scored next with a long range effort that Rohan unfortunately failed to get his hands to. 1-1. However Henry soon put the Foxes back in the lead with a fine solo run and finish 2-1. The action was non stop from the Foxes, next up William LP had a fine run on the left taking the ball from midfield to the edge of the Shire Colts box before releasing a magnificent left foot drive high into the corner of the Colts net. 3-1. The second half started off much the same as the first half ended with the Foxes 2-3-1 formation keeping the play in the Colts half of the pitch. It was Henry's turn to score next with a thunderous shot that crashed in off the cross bar 4-1. Shire Colts then began to wake up with the Foxes having to defend in numbers. William W and Matthew were now being kept increasingly busy in defence as the Colts started to step up their game. Eventually the pressure led to the Colts scoring 4-2. Foxes were now having to defend in numbers, Jamie was playing well down the right of mid field helping the defence while Henry and William LP continued to try to feed Josh to relieve the pressure on the Foxes defence. Eventually the Colts scored their third goal 4-3 which led to an anxious last few minutes but Rohan had the measure of the Colts last few attempts at goal. The final whistle came as a bit of a relief, the Foxes beating Shore Colts 4-3. A great team performance capped with two great goals from William LP and Henry.

Match 2

In the second game the Foxes were set up in the same 2-3-1 formation but with William LP replacing Rohan as keeper. The first half was quite an even battle with Shire Colts scoring the only goal. 0-1. Rohan and William swapped places at half time to bolster the left side of midfield. The prospects for the Foxes in the second half started very well with the Colts being pegged back in their half for long periods. It looked only a matter of time before the Foxes were going to score but as the clock ran down, and the Foxes narrowly missing with their many chances at goal, it one of those games where a goal might just elude them. So it was to be, the Colts rubbed salt into the Foxes wounds with a break that resulted in a well-worked second goal. 0-2. The Foxes continued to battle on but there were quite a few weary legs and having only seven players in the squad meant that there were no substitutions available. Rohan made some magnificent saves in one on one situations seemingly with every part of his body, left leg, right leg, left arm, shoulder. This was great goal keeping to watch. Unfortunately the Colts scored a third goal again on the break. 0-3. The game ended with Foxes pride intact because it looked only at matter of time before the Foxes would score during much of the second half. Well done the Foxes for not loosing their spirit and battling to the very end.

Two games at St Ursula's. The Whites at home against the Sonics and the Greens 'away' against the Buccaneers Whites.

The Whites narrowly lost out to Golden Hill Sonics in a game that saw goal mouth action at both ends, some great keeping and determined defending. Seb and Harri had great games at the back and the whole squad kept on fighting until the final whistle, but despite creating a string of chances ended up losing as the Sonics played well on the break. After an early second half goal the Foxes dominated possession but just couldn't beat an inspired Sonics keeper. As the game drew to an end, and with the Foxes pressing for an equaliser, the Sonics broke again, to wrap things up with the last kick of the game.

The Greens came out on top in a 2-1 victory thriller against the Buccaneers Whites. On a waterlogged pitch both sides worked hard and played some attractive football but it wasn't until the second half that the deadlock was broken. After a good passing move from the back, the Foxes scored first with Danny finding the net from the edge of the box and with the Buccaneers chasing the game Omar doubled the lead after a succession of saves by the Buccaneers keeper. From the restart the Buccaneers got a goal back but there was not enough time left for the Foxes to be tested further.

Y2 v Shire Colts (A)

It was honours shared after two matches with Shirehampton Colts, both matches ending 2-1.

In the 'Reds' game, the Foxs conceded two early goals against a well-organised Colts team. It took some great defensive work by Ben and a confident and dominent performance by Frazer in goal to keep the Foxes in the game.

After half time though, it was a different story. A change in tactics, to pressurise the Colts and more running with the ball to make use of the big pitch saw Foxes dominate. The free running Kieron and combative Louis in attack created attack after attack, and it was no surprise when Kieron pulled back a much-deserved goal with a fine run and shot. But the Foxes ran out of time, and couldn't quite force the equaliser.

The 'Blues' had learnt from the fine second half performance of the Reds and immediately took control of the game in the same manner. After five minutes, Acer ran free and cooly slotted the ball home. Strong midfield performances by Rajiv and Sam continued to release Acer and Samuel, and it was no surprise when Acer's fine cross from the right was despatched into the corner by Samuel. Soon after, Samuel hit the post; 3-0, at that point would have given them a comfort zone that they deserved. Colts did came back into the game, and a fantastic tackle by Oliver at the end of the first half kept the half kept the score at 2-0.

In the second half, the Foxes kept the Colts at bay. Acer withdrew to midfield to take control of the game, and the defence were magnificently marshalled by Xabi, restricting the Colts to long range shooting. Alex in goal had a great game, always looking comfortable and making some fine blocks, and it took a fine shot from the edge of the penalty area to beat him. The Foxes, however, held on comfortably to win, and it was the Colts' goalkeeper who was the busier at the end.

So a great day. The big pitch suited our game and it was especially pleasing to see some fine passing to players in space. A superb team effort in both games.

Year 5 Foxes v Bishop Road - 15th October 2011

Another fine day for football as we welcomed a large Bishop Road squad onto the hallowed turf of the downs. A good turn out from the foxes considering a number of players were away on international duty, the foxes squad being strengthened by the young, dynamic duo of Jude and Monty.

Squad 1 - Rohan, Jack, William W, Jarnell, John, Ewan, Eddie, Jamie

Match 1

In the first game WPF started very brightly with Rohan in goal, Jack and William W in defence, Ewan and John in midfield with Eddie and Jarnell as strikers. With Jack supporting midfield with powerful runs forward it wasn't long before WPF were in front. Ewan, John and Eddie combined well in midfield and chances were being created particularly for John and Eddie who shared two goals each during the match. Any threat from Bishop Road was quite quickly snuffed out by Jack and William W. Jamie replaced Jarnell in the second half.

Final score WPF 4 Bishop Road 0.

Match 2

In the second game Rohan started in goal, Jack and Jarnell in defence, John, Ewan in mid field, Eddie and Jamie up front. John, Eddie and Ewan passed the ball very well between them creating many opportunities to score, John surging down the left, Ewan down the right and Eddie through the middle. The first half ended with WPF three goals to nil up. In the second half the subs were juggled again, Jarnell replacing Rohan in goal, William W coming on for John. Rohan made the most of his chance to play up front resulting in two good goals from Rohan. Ewan stretched the score even further with his first goal of the day with a very strong right-footed strike from the edge of the penalty box that the keeper couldn't hold. Jamie was very effective in defence.

Caston in goal, with Matthew and Oscar at the back, the nippy 2 in the middle of Jude and Monty with Harrison and Joseph up front.

The Foxes started brightly with a number of attacks down the wings and through the middle. The Foxes' superiority up front soon told with a lovely through ball from Joseph allowing Harrison to smash it into the net. A scare for the Foxes as Monty, our guest player, who had started brightly took a ball into the stomach, As the wind had been taken from his sails, TJ came on to give Monty a few minutes to get his breath back. Another goal soon followed with a beautiful mazy run from Joseph. Bishop Road didn't let their heads drop though and were soon on the attack, they managed a couple of fine shots at our goal but Caston 'the cat' kept them both at bay with a great agile display. Joseph soon grabbed a third goal for the foxes in the 6th minute. Some great defending from Oscar who was showing a great awareness of distribution and some solid blocking from Matthew kept Bishop road pegged back. Harrison being an ever-present threat, constantly probing the Bishop road defence and testing the goal regularly. Jude had a great first half showing he wasn't going to be intimidated by players older than him. The second half started well with the fully recovered Monty coming on for Jude, Monty soon made his presence felt, constantly chasing down balls and looking up for the pass. Joseph soon got his well-deserved hat-trick with a fine strike. The second half continued with a fine passing performance and the boys didn't become complacent and kept up the tempo.

The game finished Foxes 4: BR 0. Well done lads!

Match 2

A bit of a change around in this match. Caston, after his fine display in goal, was given a chance on the pitch with TJ going in goal for the first half and Matthew for the second.

The Foxes started strongly once more, and were soon 1-0 up thanks to Harrison with a fantastic run from defence, carving through Bishop road to put the ball in the net with a fine finish, Jude, our little midfield dynamo had a cracking first half and soon added a second goal with a thunderbolt of a strike. Once more our defence were superb with Oscar again shielding the ball and distributing well, making sure TJ had very little to do! Joseph, who was on fire today, constantly attacked down the right and put in some lovely crosses, and finally got his first goal in this game. Quickly followed by another! Once more foxes on top early on with a great team performance, Caston showing tenacity and skill in midfield to win ball after ball and link up nicely with Monty.

2nd half had a bit if a change around in the team to give people a chance to play in different positions. Bishop road played well but the foxes were more than able to snuff out the attacks as they came. The foxes had chances to put a few more in with some great crosses from Harrison that were just beyond the reach of the players in the box. The 5th and final goal came midway through after yet another foxes attack ended in an unfortunate own goal from a Bishop Road player

Fabulous Foxes Fling Fireworks at the Falcons!

Y6 Girls v Thornbury Falcons, Nov 5th on The Downs.

3-2 and 5-1

It was bonfire night, and our fab foxes certainly set fire to Thornbury Falcons today. They came out like pocket rockets, spun like catherine wheels and by the time they were done, there was nothing but red and black cinders left of the opposition.

Ok, enough with the corny puns.

Thornbury are the league leaders in the Bristol Girls League, the team to beat. They came in strength, with two teams to battle our brave Y6 foxes. Naturally we outnumbered them, 17-12, and both of our squads played some of the best footie of the season to record historic victories.

Well done girls, you should all stand proud.

The white team featured Marielle and Erin taking turns in goal, Ella T, Ella C, Tia, Sophie C, Sophie HR, Megan. Both goalies made some game changing saves, and the defence was rock solid. Several times Ella T, Sophie HR and Megan faced a breakaway pack of three bearing down on them. No problem. Tackles were well timed and solid; occasionally a shot was fired off, and our keepers were more than a match for them.

Up front, Tia had the game of her life, running like someone really had put a firecracker somewhere they shouldn’t have. She scored a well deserved goal, as did her strike force partner Sophie C, who actually put two away. Sophie HR and Erin showed new strength as mega throw-in merchants, Sophie nearly scoring from a throw on one occasion, and Erin setting up one of Sophie C’s two goals.

When she came out of goal, Marielle showed her speed and skill, winning a lovely little goal that made it 4-1

But the final word should go to the fox with the final kick, Ella Clarke. She ran her socks off this week, and won tackle after tackle. The only thing she lacked was a little belief, and when her final kick found the back of the net, hopefully that has been put right. You’re good girl!

The Green Team was frankly scary. Emily B in goal, Emily C, Anna R, Bryony, Sophie M, Emily T, Phoebe, Paige and Anna D.

On their day, this is one of the finest teams in the district.

And today, it seems, was their day.

Passing was fluent and intelligent, tackles hard but fair, and they ran non stop. Emily B made some terrific saves, Thornbury had to find real class to score. In defence, Emily C had a cracker, making some game-changing tackles; Anna R, always a wonderfully reliable tackler, has added clever passing, picking out our midfielders and building counter attacks. Bryony seems to be everywhere, turning and twisting like one of those spiralling corkscrew fireworks and confounding the opposition!

Up front, Phoebe, Paige and Anna D ran as fast as ever, but the passes are quicker and earlier. Thornbury’s defence is solid, and it took waves of foxy attacks to break it down.

But you know those games when one team just always seems to have more players on the pitch? This was one - and that team was in green and white.

Anna and Sophie M scored early in the first half, but then Thornbury came back to make it level until 40 minutes were on the clock and injury time was ticking. You could feel the desire.. and when the foxes found the net after a lovely series of passes from Emily T, Sophie, Anna and Phoebe, well, the Downs erupted.

A great morning’s footie. The Foxes really played as a team, encouraging each other even when goals went the wrong way, and running to the last whistle.

They may have cancelled the bonfire on Saturday night, but there were fireworks on the Downs in the morning, oh yes.

Year 6 BSYL - 29th October

The challenges (and benefits) of being a school-based club playing in a league came into sharp focus this weekend. Half-term clashed with games for both the Greens and the Whites and many year 6s were off at various warm-weather training camps. The games had to go-ahead or we would lose the points anyway and so we turned to the rather wonderful year 5s....

The Greens faced an arduous journey to Coombe Dingle to take on Rockleaze. On Saturday morning our year 6 contingent was reduced to four by some last minute withdrawals. Starting with a backbone of year 6's in defence, the midfield was an all year 5 affair with Joseph on the right, Henry in the centre and Harrison down the left. The Foxes started the brightest and within five minutes a good passing move was capped by a fine finish from Joseph. Harrison was next on the score sheet with an unstoppable shot from the left. Rockleaze pulled one back but hard work by strikers to keep pressure on the ball when it was in the opposition's half soon lead to Joseph to score his second. Rohan came on for the last ten minutes of the first half and his hard work was almost rewarded with a goal.

Half time. After the break it was the Pirates who came out of the blocks quicker and scored an early goal to put us under pressure. For the next 10 minutes it looked as though Rockleaze were the more likely to score but great work from Sam, Ollie and Oscar in defence and Archie in goal kept us in the match and the pace of Harrison down the left led to a well taken goal from Henry. Henry then scored from a great solo run through central midfield and completed his hat-trick, with the final goal coming as Joseph completed his hat-trick after being played in by Max. The coaches were thrilled with the year fives contribution in this match as they stuck to their tasks and did all that was asked of them. A great credit to the Foxes. Special mention must go to Archie in goal who led his defence fantastically. The Captain's armband was awarded to Sam P. for 50 minutes of top quality defending. Well done Sam.

At home the Whites' played out a 1-1 which was their game of the season so far. Stoke Lane turned up with at least 5 of their 'A' squad Sunday league players and were a big, powerful and skillful side. This was made an even greater challenge by a the dawning realisation that Harri TD wasn't actually going to show up....leaving us with a squad of 8, but those who were there played heroically.

Stoke Lane threw the kitchen sink at us in the first 10 minutes but we soaked it up. Then, the first time Joey beat some players and burst through the middle he slotted home nicely. Their equaliser came from a well hit diagonal cross from the right, which Joey got his head to, only for it to loop wildly into the top corner. Minutes later we then had the chance of the game, when a slick 3 pass move sent Sonny through on the keeper, but he just pulled it wide.

The second half was a bit of a rearguard action, with Stoke Lane pinging it around very well but never quite cutting through us. Sam Lawes played in defence most of the game and did us proud in an unfamiliar position. By the end we had 3 at the back to match their 3 forwards, but we still managed to break out on several occasions, and with better weighted final passes could have been in once or twice.

Credit must go to Owen who had a truly outstanding game in goal, catching everything in the air like an Aussie Rules player, diving at strikers' feet, blocking and clearing with his legs when he had to, and generally keeping us in it. Sebastian did very well on his return, playing the whole 50 minutes and keeping out some very skillful players. Joey had another brilliant game and Sonny, Raul, Jacob and Alec worked their socks off.

Year 6 BSYL, 15th Oct

The Greens and the Whites both had a game, with one winning and the other losing.

The Whites squad was tested to the full as the fixture clashed with a cub camp but the coaches were delighted by the nature of the performance, as much as by the result. Six boys and two girls put in a great team effort at home to Ingleside, coming out on top by 8-2.

The bare bones of the squad was supplemented by the call up of two of the Foxes' girls team and Anna D and Sophie M did us proud. To win this game we need to play as a team and that's just what we did. We kept possession well, making good use of the lovely playing surface at St Ursula's and, when Ingleside had the ball, worked hard in defence. Joey wore the captain's armband and played his heart out, deserving his four goals. In a reshuffled formation Sonny started in goal to allow Owen to star in defence alongside Sophie, but he still had enough time of the pitch to score two, the second a cheeky lob. Sam proved a constant threat, creating chances for his team and finally scoring himself from close range. Alec had his best game of the season and Isaac was happy to switch from attack to have a stint in goal to allow Sonny to have a run out. The highlight, however, was an all girl effort, with Sophie and Anna combining superbly for Anna to smash home on the half volley.

The Greens were also affected by the cub camp and suffered a 2-0 defeat against a well organised and highly motivated Golden Hill Sonics side. Both sides started well with chances coming at either end, but good play down the wings allowed the Sonic to score near the end of the first half. In the second half we had to chase the game and as the game wore took more and more risks and the Sonics finally wrapped up the win as they broke quickly for to score a well taken goal.

Y2 v Sefton Park (A)

A great performance saw the strong Year 2 Foxes squad dominate Sefton Park Scorpions and come away with a win and a draw.

In the first match, the 'blue' Foxes quickly dictated the game. The key was a strong midfield marshalled by Alex, Rajiv and Frazer, in front of the fine defensive duo of Xabi and Louis. It wasn't long before Samuel capitalised on a hesitant Scorpions defence to rifle home the Foxes' first goal. The free running skills of Acer soon created a second, and the Foxes could have gone further ahead.

After half time, it was more of the same. It took a great save by the Scorpion's goalkeeper to deny Acer a second, but Samuel was on hand to skip over the goalie and tap in his second from six inches. This typified a Foxes' performance where they were first to everything - the Scorpions did not have a clear cut opportunity and the Foxes ended up winning 3-0.

In the second game, the 'red' Foxes continued in the same vein, with strong midfield performances from Tom, Oliver and the ever-tigerish Ben. They deservedly went ahead with a star goal, Sam bambouzling the Scorpion's defence and giving the goalkeeper no chance with a great shot.

The Scorpions were a match for the Foxes midfield and despite a number of great runs from Kieron which could have added to the Foxes' lead, the Scorpions drew level with a
shot from Max giving William no chance in goal. Even so, the Foxes could have won the game, and Jess nearly capped a fine performance with a winner.

Yr 6 - BSYL, 8th October

The Y6 Foxes boys stormed back into action, after a two week layoff from league fixtures. Both teams recorded impressive wins in very different games, despite the absence of head coach Andy on a fact-finding and training weekend in the Isle of Wight.

The Whites travelled for the first time to Brislington FC. Once sufficient numbers of the squad (and the ref) had found the ground (tip: don't use satnav, just stay on the A4, last turning left before the ring road), the match began with the Foxes streaming forward and creating several early chances, with Raul in particular coming close several times. Joey opened the scoring with a thunderbolt free kick, then added two more either side of the break. At this stage the Foxes seemed in control, and could have been up by more, but...when the Foxes failed to clear the box and Brislington's star player pounced to sweep one in for the home side, the Foxes began to falter while the home side grew in confidence. Another followed for them from a long free kick high into the net. Then, when a momentary defensive hesitation allowed the Brislington star to nip in for a third, alarm bells were ringing and it was "deja vu all over again" (see match report v. Shirehampton, 24/9/11...).

With parents from both sides in fine voice, and chances at both ends, it seemed at one stage that the Foxes might suffer another reverse. But tireless tackling and chasing from Harri TD, Aidan and later Jacob kept the home team out. Then, when the Foxes won a corner on the left with 7 minutes to go, Sam L floated a perfect ball into the goalmouth, which an unfortunate home defender could only nod in. The Foxes battled well until the end and hung on for an uncomfortable 4-3 win, in a hard fought but sporting contest.

Meanwhile, across town at leafy St. Ursula's, it was a somewhat different story as the Greens hosted Rockleaze Rangers, who were unfortunate to fine the Foxes in fine form. The Foxes started the brightest and a good passing move released Jack down the left who crossed for Danny who made no mistake. 1-0. The second goal soon followed as Omar headed home at the back post from a Danny corner.

Rockleaze fought hard and produced some good football and a few minutes later a fine pass opened up our defence, and the Rockleaze forward dribbled around Archie only for Ollie K. to clear on the goal-line This near miss seemed to galvanize the Greens and a free kick gave Jack the opportunity to drive the ball home from a good 20 yards out. Jack then turned supplier with a great cross from which Danny scored his second.

Corners continued to provide a real threat to Rockleaze and the next goal came from another great Danny corner which Max thumped home. Then a flurry of goals: Ollie C. crossing for Omar to score: Nick providing for Ollie K ; and then Max doing the same for Omar. More goals came from Danny, Omar, Ollie K. and at the final whistle Danny once more. Rockleaze can feel unlucky at the score-line having worked hard all game and their heads never dropped, but the final score was 12-0 to the Greens.

The coaches were obviously pleased with the display but most of all pleased that even when well on top the Greens kept playing proper football.

Yr 6 v Ashley Down, 1st Oct

With the School entering a team into a Saturday morning Tournament (where we reached the semi-final)the Foxes saw a return to the world of friendlies as the league agreed to a postponement of the Greens' and Whites' fixtures as we could not field enough players.

The boys who were available fought out a dogged away draw with a strong Ashley Down team in glorious October sunshine. Both sides had their attacking moments, but neither could break the deadlock over half an hour, with defences very much on top. The game finished with a very grown-up 0-0 scoreline. The Foxes' defence was expertly marshalled by Ollie K, with strong tackling contributions in defence and midfield from Sam P, Aidan and Harry F, leaving Owen without too many saves to make. Special mention also to Nick, who found some promising positions down the wings from Owen's clearance kicks but was frequently 'in the wars' from some strong but fair Ashley Down challenges. All in all it was a very good effort and all the boys contributed well, especially those who came on and off as subs.

A second game, and away (again) at Ashley Down. Our opponents couldn't quite field two teams, so the Foxes appeared to be playing against Ashley Down's strongest players in every game!

Despite this, the Foxes produced four great performances. The first game was extremely close, with Ashley Down edging a 1-2 win. It was clear that the coaches appeared to have learnt from the previous week, with shrewd tactical advice like 'Give it to Acer!' That's because in the second game the Foxes stormed to a two goal lead in as many minutes. The final score in that game was comfortable 2-1 win to the Foxes (our first win!), although we had to thank Ben's fantastic double tackle to deny Ashley Down's star striker a late equaliser.

In the third game, Samuel's clinical finish was the only goal of the game, although the Foxes would have scored a hatful but for the heroics of the Ashley Down goalie. The final game looked like a goal-less draw until a late Ashley Down penalty gave them a win.

So, a very enjoyable morning and the sharing of the points with an equally matched team. Some great teamwork today, and fantastic support. We look forward to many more exciting encounters.

Year 6 - Bristol Saturday Youth League, 24th September

Ah. Oh well. As England have found out over the years you can learn a great deal from defeat and both Foxy squads need to learn a fair bit.

The Whites like to entertain and it was great to see a seven goal thriller at St Ursula's against Shirehampton. the one real probelm was that it was the away team that scored the late and decisive goal in the final minute to win 3-4.

We started strongly and dominated, leading 2-0 with goals from Sonny and Sebastian, with a screamer from 20 yards out. Things then went a bit wobbly either side of half time as Shire then upped the pace and punished defensive errors with three goals in quick succession. To the Whites credit this woke them up and we created a number of very good chances and even more half chances before Jacob scored to set up an exciting finish. Shire then clinched the points when a lightning counter attack down the left was finished off from close range.

The Greens had an 'away' game, aslo at St Ursula's and came up against a good Bishop Road side. With many of the squad (5 in total, and a sixth arriving late) the Greens drafted in some talented year five players to bolster the team.
Bishop Road started the brightest and put us under waves of pressure for most of the first half, but a counter attacking move by the Foxes with Josheph breaking down the right and feeding Jack C to slot home. 1-0 to the Foxes, and shortly after Harrison tested the keeper from the half-way line! But just before the break Bishop Road got the breakthrough they deserved and equalized. 1-1

Half time and the second half found the Foxes asleep. Bishop Road took advantage and from a corner scored with a great header into the top corner. The Foxes then went in search of an equalizer and we were hit on the break as good passing split the defence and another good finish led to another goal 3-1. Chances then came thick and fast and Bishop Road cleared a good Foxy shot off the line, while at the other end a penelty was saved by TJ at the other end. More good fottball from Bishop Road took the score to 5-1 before agood consolation goal from Jack C ended the match on a slightly brighter note.

Congratulations to Bishop Road who played good football throughout and were deserved winners. The Captains Armband this week went to Ollie K. who didn't put a foot wrong, but special mention must go to the year 5s who although being a year younger did the year 6s proud.

Y2 v Bishop Road (A) - Our First Game!

Our first ever league game, and a tricky away fixture at Bishop Road.

A sunny morning produced two close games and two not-so-close ones. Our two evenly matched teams produced valiant displays against a strong and well-organised squad of Buccaneers who eventually won all four games.

The loudest cheer of the day though was reserved for the moment in Match 3 where Acer's goal took the Foxes into a lead, but we eventually lost 3-4, despite a second from Acer and a net-bursting free kick from Jamie.

We all learned a lot, especially the coaches. Possibly our tactics were not quite spot on, and we shouldn't have been so lenient in pre-season training. But despite the scoreline, we all enjoyed ourselves - the first of many.

Year 6 - BSYL 17th September. Two games. Two wins.

So, after playing each other last week, round two saw the Foxes taking on 'real' opposition for the first time in the League.

The Greens were away to Stoke Lane AFC and the travelling supporters enjoyed a hard fought 3-2 victory, if not the weather. The Foxes started brightly, working hard and playing some good attacking football and the reward came with a penalty in the 10th minute. Danny struck it well but the keeper managed a good save. Never daunted, more good work by the Foxes opened up the Stoke Lane defence once more and this time Omar made no mistake cooling slotting home. 1-0.

Stoke Lane remained dangerous on the counter and a few minutes later Archie was forced to make a good save which just happened to take place outside his area. Fortunately, the free kick flew wide.

The second half was more balanced and Stoke Lane scored first with a well worked free kick which left Archie unsighted. 1-1. Then from the kick off Danny weaved his way through their midfield giving the ball to Jack who fed Omar for his second goal of the match. 2-1. Jack was the supplier of the third foxes goal with a great pass to Danny who thumped it into the far corner. 3-1. Stoke Lane were far from beaten though, and played some fine passing football to score their second. 3-2.

The game ended with Stoke Lane in control and the Foxes had to work hard for the last few minutes to hang on. The coaches were very pleased with the hard work and commitment of the team and Harry F. was awarded the Captain's armband for next week after his hard work on the right hand side.

The Whites were at home against Buccaneers (Bishop Road) Whites. St Ursula's again provided a delightful surface despite the driving rain.

The Foxes started very brightly and probably should have been 4 or 5 up at half time. As it was after going 2-0 up with goals from Joey and Raul we allowed the Buccaneers to pull one back after a goal mouth scramble just before the break.

The sub-less Buccaneers had a stronger second half, but they could not turn their pressure into goals, with Seb and Harri outstanding in the Foxes’ defence, Owen again having a storming match and Joey putting every ounce of his energy into tackling back as well as launching attacks. After one fine save from Owen the ball was played up to Sam who tried his luck from long range and the wet ball squirmed through the keeper.

As with the Greens, the Whites ended up soaking up pressure but they were equal to the task. Harri was singled out, from a team-worth's of great performances, to wear the Captain's arm-band next week.

Well done to all.

Year 6 - Bristol Saturday Youth League Debut

So - it wasn't the Downs and it wasn't the Friendly League but the new season started in fine and pretty familiar fashion.

For the League season we have split the squad in two. The Greens (Archie, Ollie K, Ian,Danny, Ollie C, Jack T, Harry, Omar, Nick, Max, Sam P and Jack C) and the Whites (Owen, Seb, Harri, Aidan, Isaac, Joey, Sam L, Raul, Jacob, Alec and Sonny).

The two Westbury Park Foxes teams met in their opening BSYL fixture in the beautiful setting of St. Ursula's. Those watching enjoyed a thrilling and hard fought 3-3 draw.

The Greens started more brightly and Owen pulled off a fine one handed save to deny Danny. The Whites edged into it and Joey took his chance well after Archie, Ollie k and Ian had done well to block a series of opportunities.

Max opened the scoring for the Greens, finishing off a fine through ball from Nick, but that just provoked the Whites. A stylish hat trick for Joey and a string of high quality saves from Owen put the Whites 3-1 up.

Not to be out done, and showing real resolve, the Greens dug in deep and rallied with goals from Omar and Danny to level the scores and set up an exciting final 5 minutes, in which both sides had chances to win. With almost the last kick of the game Danny was again denied by Owen as his free kick was tipped onto the bar.

All in all a great start with both teams playing some good football.

Y4 Foxes Dancing in the Rain at Rockleaze Tournament 12th June 2011

Drought? What drought? Another Sunday. Another deluge. If St Nick’s was miserable, this was desperate. In conditions that duck’s would have hated, Rockleaze decided that their annual tournament would go ahead. Understandable, but not sure the decision was made with the players’ welfare at heart.

Having learnt the benefits of trying to stay dry the previous week, we arrived armed with a large weatherproof shelter (thank you Highams). Tucked into a protected corner of the wind-swept field, our squad of 10 prepared for what would be another battle against the elements.

Tournament Squad: Harrison, Henry, Jack, Joseph, Josh, Ludo, Matthew Y, Rohan (goalie), Stanley, Tee-Jay.

The group stages were smaller, more manageable affairs. Two leagues of 5 teams drew familiar faces from the friendly league and the strongest teams in the area, including the winners of all our previous tournaments.

We played to our strengths - Rohan in goal; Jack anchoring defence; Matthew and Henry as midfield sweepers; Ludo, Josh and Tee-Jay as mid-field dynamos, Stanley, Joseph and Harrison set loose to terrify opposition defences.

League Match 1 – Clifton United Yellows
As expected, the Foxes dominated right from the start and it wasn’t long before Tee-Jay opened his account with a well-taken goal. In defence we were solid and Rohan was not troubled all match long. This enabled the midfield to feed the wings and the crosses being produced were high quality and more chances went begging. The Foxes were playing lovely football despite the conditions, and more goals followed. An accidental clash of heads saw Harrison pick up a shiner but he battled on and was rewarded with two goals.
Result: Foxes 3: Clifton United Yellows 0

League Match 2 – Rockleaze Blacks
Perhaps the weakest of the Rockleaze sides, the Blacks were no match for the Foxes in full flight. Again our midfield dominated the game allowing Jack and Rohan a spectator’s view of the match. In attack we were barely out of their half, and the resulting pressure brought another two goals from Tee-Jay and a goal apiece for Ludo and Joseph.
Result: Foxes 4: Rockleaze Blacks 0

League Match 3 – Rockleaze Whites
A much stronger Rockleaze team meant we had to up our game. Everyone played magnificently and although we continued to play the better football, Jack, Matthew, Henry and Rohan were all called into action to keep Rockleaze out. Stanley supplied the winning goal and we finished the match unbeaten.
Result: Foxes 1: Rockleaze Whites 0

League Match 4 – Shire Colts
Shire Colts fielded their strongest players as both teams started the match with unbeaten records. Both went close on several occasions and the Foxes were unlucky not to score. However, the drenching the players had received all morning was beginning to have its effect. Tears and fatigue began to set in but we held on to remain unbeaten. Result: Foxes 0: Shire Colts 0

After a long wait in the rain, we were confirmed as group runners-up to Shire Colts who were equal on points (10) but had scored one more goal than us. After more waiting around and two changes of pitch, we eventually faced a strong Stoke Lane squad who had won their group (also on 10 points).

Semi-Final – Stoke Lane
Unfortunately the appalling conditions had done their worse and we went into the semi-final with two players down and others far from their normal skillful and determined selves. Rolling subs, lashing of hot drinks, chocolate and anything that would give our players the energy to continue followed. Everyone who took to the field tried their hardest and we did have chances. But much of the Foxes fire had been extinguished and Stoke Lane took advantage to score first. They were then awarded a penalty when one of their players lost control of the ball and went down in the box. The ensuing goal, combined with a desire to get out of the rain meant the match was effectively over. But the Foxes battled on and almost scored near the end. A proud effort.

Despite the disappointment of being knocked out, we had the consolation of knowing that we were the only team to have drawn against the eventual tournament winners (Shire Colts) and the only team they could not score against.

As always, the Foxes gave their all, and then some. Again their skill, style of play and sporting conduct drew comments of appreciation and compliments from opposition coaches. Again we were unbeaten in the group stages. Again we conceded no goals in our league matches. Again we were easily as good as the team that won. Again they made us proud.

Thanks must also be given to all the parents who came to support and did all they could to keep us going – Thank you!

Although the conditions were the same for everyone, somehow the rain and cold affects us more than others. As the cats and dogs continued to howl, 10 brave little Foxes headed home for hot baths – bowed but not beaten! Given the progress that every one of the Foxes has made this season, we know our time will come. We might just need a sunny day for it to happen…

Total football, total exhaustion for Y4 Foxes at St Nick’s 5th June 2011

Despite it being half term, the Foxes were able to field a strong squad for the St Nick’s Tournament. In previous years this had been a held on warm sunny days. This time the skies were leaden and the driving wind and rain a constant and draining presence.

With many unfamiliar teams, this was another chance to see how the Foxes match up to bigger clubs that play regular league football – many from the Hanham Minor League and Mid-Gloucester Mini-soccer League. We began in a group of 8 teams! It was going to be a long haul if we were to progress.

Tournament Squad: Billy, Harrison, Henry, Joseph, Ludo, Rohan (goalie), Stanley, Tee-Jay.

Drawing on previous successes, we set up for the tournament with Rohan in goal, Billy, Tee-Jay and Henry sharing the defensive/mid-field responsibilities, Ludo our midfield lynch-pin and Stanley, Joseph and Harrison taking their normal roles as our rapid strike force. With matches of 10 minutes one way, it was essential to get off to a flying start. In brief the results were:

League Match 1 – Wotton Rovers
A cold day and a cold start. Still, we dominated the match and went close but could not convert pressure into goals.
Result: Foxes 0: Wotton Rovers 0

League Match 2 – St Nicholas Blue
Stanley got the Foxes rolling with a well-taken goal.
Result: Foxes 1: St Nicholas Blue 0

League Match 3 – Yate United Blue
Foxes were on a roll. Goals from Harrison and Joseph gave us a well-deserved win.
Result: Foxes 2: Yate United Blue 0

League Match 4 – Stoke Lane Blue
Potentially our toughest match. Played in a downpour, Stanley opened the scoring for the Foxes. Stoke Lane then got one back though an own-goal before Joseph struck to give us another victory.
Result: Foxes 2: Stoke Lane Blue 1

League Match 5 – AEK Boco Red
Another big name club and another great performance. Despite creating most of the chances we just couldn’t get the goal we deserved and some great defending and excellent goalkeeping from Rohan kept the game alive.
Result: Foxes 0: AEK Boco Red 0

League Match 6 – Downend Saints Red
A totally dominant performance with the entire team playing a skillful passing game. Joseph bagged a hat trick, including two tap-ins as Harrison passed around the keeper. It could have been 6 or 7.
Result: Foxes 3: Downend Saints Red 0

League Match 7 – Thornbury Town Red
A must –win match to guarantee our progress. The cold and wet was beginning to take its toll but we still dominated and a stunning goal from Stanley, direct from a corner, gave us our fifth group stage win.
Result: Foxes 1: Thornbury Town Red 0

A superb team performance saw us qualify for the knockout stages as group winners. Sadly a whole morning spent getting soaked with just a couple of brollies for shelter had taken its toll. Other, more experienced clubs had brought mobile shelters to keep dry and warm between matches. A lesson learnt. The Foxes however began to fall by the wayside.

Semi-Final – Stoke Lane Red
Despite having two of our players retire in tears because of exhaustion and the cold, the Foxes tried their hardest. We went one down but a magnificent goal from Joseph brought us level. The game finished in a draw and extra time beckoned. After 82 minutes of sodden, cold wind-swept football it was no surprise that more players were in tears, but without any subs left, they bravely agreed to soldier on. It was too much and we lost in extra time.
Result: Foxes 1: Stoke Lane Red 1 (Foxes lost in extra time)

Man of the Tournament – all eight players deserved an award. All made us proud. But in the end it went to Billy for his tireless running, couageous defending and fabulous concentration throughout.

Overall, the Foxes played magnificently, drawing compliments from the coaches of other teams, including one who said we were the best team they had seen all day. Our record in the group stages was outstanding – played 7, won 5, drew 2, scoring 9 goals and conceding none other than an own goal. Sadly the effort of 70 minutes of high-octane football in miserable conditions took a heavy toll and the semi-final was clearly a game too far. However, the Year 4 Foxes have become a team that others fear to play and we know that with a full compliment of fit players, we can beat anyone. One day, with a touch of luck, our chance will come...

Close call for Y4 Foxes at Thornbury 22nd May 2011

A warm and dry Sunday afternoon saw the gathering of two squads of Foxes for the Thornbury six-a-side tournament. Unlike many other tournaments the group stages are small but lead to everyone going into a knockout stage –either for the consolation plate, or the more prestigious cup. The question was which would our teams end up in?

Green Squad: Billy, Brody, Caston, Eddie, Josh, Oskar, Sam and William W.

League Match 1 – Stoke Lane A
A great start against a team that is historically very strong. Josh scored to give the Foxes a well-deserved win.
Result: Foxes 1: Stoke Lane A 0

League Match 2 – Southmead Community Sp
Southmead were the team of the tournament last year, but the Foxes were stronger this year. Despite some good chances we went down by two goals.
Result: Foxes 0: Southmead Community Sp 2

League Match 3 – Thornbury Town Red
A close match that could have gone either way. The difference was a wonder strike from Josh, a spinning volley that looped over the keeper and brought back memories of David Platt’s goal against Belgium in Italia 90.
Result: Foxes 1: Thornbury Town Red 0

With 6 points we qualified for the cup quarterfinals as group runners-up.

Quarterfinal – Shire Colts B
The Foxes just could not hold out against one of the strongest teams in the tournament and despite fantastic play from everyone, we went out by a single goal.
Result: Foxes 0: Shire Colts B 1

White Squad: Harrison, Henry, Joseph, Ludo, Matthew Y, Rohan, Matthew W and Tee-Jay.

League Match 1 – Stoke Lane B
A great start against what we expected to be a strong side. Goals from Ludo and Harrison topped an impressive team performance.
Result: Foxes 2: Stoke Lane A 0

League Match 2 – Thornbury Town Red
For some reason we never got going – was it tiredness from last week’s efforts? Despite creating some good chances we went behind against a team we would normally beat with ease.
Result: Foxes 0: Thornbury Town Red 1

League Match 3 – Minchinhampton Rangers A
The Foxes upped their game but were still not playing as well as they could. Despite that, we dominated the match, missed our chances and “murdered them” 0:0!
Result: Foxes 0: Minchinhampton Rangers A 0

Again we qualified for the cup quarterfinals as group runners-up.

Quarterfinal – Shire Colts A
Players that last week were playing for Stoke Lane re-appeared in Shire Colts colours for another close match. Again the Foxes were mis-firing and went behind. But we fought back bravely and controlled the match towards the end. Harrison latched on to a through ball to rocket us level. With the clock ticking down, the team conjured another opening and Harrison was away again. This time two players combined to scythe him down. The ref waved play on and blew for full time.

In the penalty shoot-out both keepers did well – Rohan saving a shot to keep our hopes alive. But it was not to be. The penalty curse hit the Foxes once more.
Result: Foxes 1: Shire Colts A 1 (Foxes lost on penalties)

Footnote: Shire Colts A went out in the semi finals after another penalty shoot-out. Shire Colts B went on to win the Tournament 1:0 in the final.

For some, the efforts of last week’s tournament were still on their minds and in their legs. For others, this was a chance to show just how good the Foxes have become. Both teams made it through to the quarterfinals. Both teams were very close to going further. Both teams can take comfort in the knowledge that there was nothing between them and the team that won the tournament. And both teams played with skill, pride and passion. Next time the results might just go our way…Well done to all!

Yr6 Foxes finish on a high at Rockleaze!

Sunday brought more heavy rain & enough wind to blow down Jon's new gazebo which he bought in order to keep us dry, luckily, unlike at St Nicks last weekend, there was a handy pavilion selling hot food & drinks in which to seek some respite between matches. Our squad of 10 players Andrew, Romi, Maddy, Jacob, Ben J, Ollie D, Jon, Kiran, Henry M & Hamish looked like they were going to have a tough time getting through the group stage when we looked at the 20 teams entered including the likes of Bitton, Sonics, Forest Green, Yate, Ashley Down, Hallen, Downend, Ashton Boys & of course 4 teams from Rockleaze.

Match 1 - We started with a tough opener against Downend A & were unlucky to go a goal behind, however with time running out we showed great determination to create a number of chances & deservedly equalised when Ben J won a race to the ball to poke it past their on-rushing keeper. Final score 1-1.

Match 2 - Next we played local rivals Bishop Road & dominated for large parts of the game, however it seemed that we could end up frustrated as the chances weren't going in. Finally though their perseverance paid off when a corner from Hamish was headed in at the near post by Ben J. Final score 1-0.

Match 3 - Golden Hill Sonics had pulled out so we had a bit of extra time to dry off & peruse the sweet stall in the pavilion.

Match 4 - With the rain still lashing down we went into our last group match on the same points as Downend who had already finished, however they had scored 3 more goals than us. We therefore needed a point or, if we were to lose, score at least 4 goals to give us a better "goals scored" total. Standing in our way were the hosts, & probably favourites, Rockleaze Rangers A. As we have done so often in the past the whole squad rose to challenge, working extremely hard for each other, keeping their shape & discipline & tackling everything Andrew, who unselfishly went in goal for the whole tournament, made some fantastic saves resulting in a fantastic 0-0 draw!

Quarter Final - As runners up in Group A we faced another highly fancied team, & the winners of Group B, Bitton A in the Qtr Finals. We knew that the games were only going to get harder but by this time the squad knew that if they worked hard & played as a team then anything was possible. And so it proved as we got stuck in straight from the kick-off & never gave them a chance to settle. As Bitton got more frustrated so chances came our way, Hamish broke clear on the left hand side & managed to keep ahead of their chasing defenders to slot the ball past the keeper. Final score 1-0.

Semi Final - Our Semi Final draw presented a rematch against Rockleaze B who had beaten us a week earlier at St Nicks. Another tight match, hard fought in all areas of the pitch with chances presenting themselves for both teams. Kiran had a chance to put us in front & at the other end of the pitch Maddy & Romi worked together to stiffle many attacks with Andrew again keeping us in the match when they broke through. As the full time whistle went it was still 0-0 which meant we were into extra time. This continued in much the same vein as before the break with the growing, & increasingly vocal (well done Jo!), contingent of Foxes supporters ensuring that the players energy levels didn't drop. It was all getting very tense with the threat of penalties looming when Ben J pressurised one of the Rockleaze players in to a mistake, broke away with the ball & gave the keeper no chance. A couple more minutes remained but we kept their composure & discipline to ensure we reached our second final of the tournament season.

The Final - A rematch of our last group match against hosts & favourites Rockleaze A. The squad were overjoyed to be in the final but kept their feet on the ground, confident that if they carried on with the same disciplined & determined approach they were more than capable of lifting the trophy. It turned out to be another very competitive match with chances at both ends, unfortunately it came down to a single goal with went to Rockleaze. Final score - 0-1.

Although obviously disappointed not to have won, the overall feeling was one of pride in themselves, their team mates & their performance from start to finish. They were also extremely gracious & generous in defeat, congratulating each of the Rockleaze A team & were a credit to the Yr6 parents, the WP Foxes club & themselves. Special thanks to Jacob, Jon & Henry who, despite having limited opportunities to play, didn't complain & played their part by supporting those on the pitch.

It's fantastic that a relatively small group of school friends in a club with an inclusive approach, could develop over a period of 7 years to a point where in their final year out of 4 tournaments their record stands as:

Clifton - Semi-final, lost by a single goal in extra time
Thornbury - Final, lost on penalties
Rockleaze - Final, lost by a single goal

Year 5 Boys at Rockleaze, 12th June

Well it's now official.

The year five boys are both a very competitive and talented squad and a great bunch of lads who really deserved to win a Tournament this season. As it was we came so close again, losing 1-0 in extra time of the final at Rockleaze.

The day started wet. Got wetter. The gazebo blew down. It carried on raining. And raining. However the boys played with skill and commitment throughout, getting stronger as the day wore on as they somehow got used to the conditions and worked out the best way to play in them

Two tough games at the start of the group and two 0-0 draws with the best sides that Shire Colts and Rockleaze could field. In neither game were we under much pressure but we didn't really create much either. Then came wins against Ashley Down (2-0, goals from Joey and Danny) and Golden Hill Sonics (3-0, goals from Jack, Sam and Danny), the first a great strike and the latter two great team goals.

The final group game against Downend Saints 'B' and if we won it we were guaranteed a place in the semi-finals. Somehow we did not score. In one 30 second period we had the ball cleared off the line may be 5, may be six times. We hit the post. The keeper made saves. But the ball would not go in. Never has the saying " we murdered them 0-0" been more apt.

Anyway, results in the other games meant that we finished a very strong group second on goal difference.

In the semi-final we met Downend Saints 'A' and although it took us until extra time for Harri to score the winner we were in control for the most part and Archie was never seriously threatened.

And then the final. Shire Colts again. 0-0 at the end of full time. They nicked goal in extra time and then Danny deserved to equalise as he curled a free kick onto the post. No goal would come and so we ended as runners up for the third time this season. As the Rockleaze Chairman said at the presentation - it could have gone either way.

I would like to thank all of the boys who played today (Archie, Owen, Harri, Seb, Ollie K, Sam L, Danny, Joey, Nick, Jack C, Omar and Raul). As with Clifton they made the coaches' job easy as they accepted substitutions with good grace. Some boys didn't play as much as others but when they came on they showed how important they were to us - Owen and Harri's contribution in the semi being a very good example. Max and Sonny even braved the weather to watch which was above and beyond the call of duty and very much appreciated.

Thanks also to all of the parents for their support, cups of coffee and soup and attempts to keep everyone as dry and warm as possible.

The coaches have really enjoyed this season which is due to all 24 boys in the squad.

The End of Season Tournament is on 16th July (more details to follow) and it would be great to see as many parents as possible at the Party in the evening (see Sally 'The Ticketmaster' Newman next week).

Y3 Girls go to Bath!

A fearless group of Y3 girls (plus one!) bravely headed into the unknown at the Bath Arsenal Tournament this weekend. After entering what we thought was a girls' tournament, we found out shortly before that is was if fact a boys' tournament (or 'mixed' as the organisers called it!), and an experienced boys' tournament at that.
Undeterred we set off armed only with a big bag of Haribo, and a ringer in the form of Joseph who had bravely agreed to come and play in goal for us.
We need not have worried. Whilst the results predictably went against us, a couple of matches were tight, and the girls football improved as the day progressed, with some fine tackling, running and passing. All in all we enjoyed some great match practice and the sun shone throughout!
Credit must also go to the coaches and players of the teams we faced, who were, without exception, all respectful and encouraging of the girls participation in the tournament.
Looks like we might have to travel even further if we are to find an all girls tournament, Oxford sounds promising!!!

Y5 Girls Battle in Oxfordshire Final

We'd never heard of Carterton before. It's kind of near Oxford.
Well now, they've heard of the Foxes - and they ain't gonna forget us.

1:35 on Sat 11 June should go down as a Great Foxy Moment.

We'd made the final. Against our regular enemies, St Nicks. They'd nicked a goal, and it looked like that was it. Then, the foxes came back.

"C'mon, we can do this,' they cried to each other.

It started at the back. Ella Thrasher tackled their star striker and got rid, quickly, to Phoebe. Up the wing, on to Sophie M. To Emily T. To Anna D. I seriously counted 6 passes before Emily found herself near the goal. But did she have a go? No, she laid it off beautifully to Sophie M who was in prime position and Bam! 1-1

All the neutrals applauded what was a fantastic display of team football, perfectly finished. OK, for the record, the final ended 1-1, and in the dreaded penalty shoot-out we lost, 2-1 again.

But what a route to the final. First two games, we won 2-0 and 3-0. Terrific goal from Phoebe Marshall got us off. A weak goal kick, Phoebe was on it like a terrier and rifled it home. Anna D soon scored again, and frankly, our midfield was so dominant they used the rest of the match as shooting practice.

Next game we were, frankly, rather scary. More goals, from Anna D and Sophie M and it was 3-0 this time.

At the back, Sophie HR and Ella T tackled and intercepted and cleared the ball confidently. In goal, Emily B played the tournament of her life. Two stunning saves against St Nicks, and throughout the day, that rare combination of cool head and massive boot.

Emily T was everywhere, in defence, up front, on the line, you name it. Go and have a lie down girl!

And Phoebe, Molly, Anna D and Sophie ran like the wind. Never gave up, always believed.
Several spectators commented on what good sports they were, and what good friends they seemed. Off the pitch, the girls stuck together and encouraged each other like you wouldn't believe.

It was a shame the entire Foxy Nation weren't there to witness a team that did us proud. Guess that might have been the 90minute drive... Me? I'd have driven 3 hours to watch that.

Yr 5 Girls at St Nicks - 4th June

Eight brave Foxes travelled to Yate to take part in the St Nicks Tournament. They arrived in time to see the year 5 boys battling bravely in the final of their competition, only to lose out in extra time. The girls were determined to go one better when they played.

Anna D, Anna R, Phoebe, Tia, Ella T, Marielle, Emily T and Bryony all played with skill and commitment throughout some tough games. The first was against Thornbury and is often the case when the two teams meet it was a close affair. The Foxes were unlucky to fall behind but they never gave up and Anna D rifled home a late equaliser to get us off to a solid start. Another draw against TC Juniors could really have been a win as the girls, with Anna, Phoebe, Bryony and Tia working hard in midfield, Emily, Anna R and Ella solid at the back and Marielle excellent in goal, the Foxes dominated but could not score.

Then a new opposition for us in the form of Cheltenham Spa. Emily and Phoebe each hit the post within the space of seconds and other chances came and went. In the end a very late break away goal for Cheltenham settled it, very much against the run of play. A long wait was followed with a crunch game against the hosts. If we could win we would make it through to the final. In the end St Nicks edged out winners and went on to win the final.

Overall an excellent display by all of the girls which deserved to win us a place in the final.

Year 5 Boys - St Nicks Tournament, 4th June

Another good, but ultimately frustrating day, for the year 5 Foxes at the always enjoyable, and highly competitive, St Nicks Tournament.

We took two squads and both matched up well against opposition that was exclusively drawn from established clubs, mainly from the East/North East of Bristol and all playing regular league football.

Dave and Ewan looked after Westbury Park Foxes Blues (Owen, Seb, Nick, Sonny, Harry, Ollie C, Jack T, Jacob) and it all came down to the last game against Yate for second place. A win would have put the Foxes through to the semi but despite dominating the game and creating a number of good chances we somehow managed to concede two avoidable goals and couldn't convert more than one of our chances. Great performances throughout the team - Owen brave in goal as always, Seb in control at the back, Jack making a series of important tackles, Nick appearing everywhere, Ollie, Harry and Jacob working hard in midfield on huge pitches and Sonny causing problems up front.

Westbury Park Foxes Red (Archie, Danny, Joey, Raul, Max, Harri, Ollie K and Jack C) were slow to start losing to 1-0 to a Thornbury side that we were to meet again in the final but got better and better, storming through the rest of the group games, rounding it off with a 5-1 win over against St Nicks with a hat trick from Joey, a great team goal finished expertly by Jack and an individual effort of quality from Raul.

The boys did their ageing coaches a favour in the semi against the other St Nicks side by removing any nerves by way of a dominant performance from the start and running out 3-0 winners with two goals from Danny (the second a fantastic finish from a great through ball from Joey) and one from Joey.

Then the final.

10 mins each way. Then 6 mins extra time. The wind made it a real game of two halves as first we dominated and then Thornbury took their turn. Neither side scored in normal time. We came close from a series of great corners from Danny. They came close but brave defending and top notch keeping kept them out. Extra time was 0-0 until the last 90 seconds when finally they got past the magnificent Archie. Yet again - so close. Yet again - the boys did the club proud.

The Red squad should be delighted by the way they played throughout but particularly in taking a Hanham League 1 side so close in both games when the opposition scored either 3 or 4 against all of the other teams they played.

Thanks to all of the boys, all of the parents for their great support from very early in the morning and, for the final, the massed ranks of year three Foxes, the year five girls and some former Foxes now in year 7. Quite a day.

Year 5 at the Thornbury Tournament

Another good performance by the Foxes at the second Tournament of the year and for the second week running we came close to winning the whole thing.

We took two evenly-matched squads both of which played good football and proved hard to beat. One squad (Harry, Aidan, Owen, Sam L, Oli S, Raul, Alec and Max) ended up losing in the quarter finals on penalties of the consolation plate after playing their best game of the day but just failing to turn their possession in to a goal.

The other squad (Harri, Sam P, Jack T, Archie, Danny, Omar, Jacob and Ollie C) finished second in their group, won a quarter final and then lost on sudden death penalties in the semi.

All of the boys played really well and yet again we more than held our own against a range of teams, most of whom play regular, competitive league football.

Year 5s at the Clifton Tournament, 15th May

For the second year running we were beaten finalists, losing on the rather bizarre 3 a-side slow death torture that the organisers prefer to penalties, but that really doesn't tell the whole story.

The boys were magnificent and although we didn't come away as Champions we were the best U10s team at the event and the whole squad should be immensely proud of themselves.

5 group games. 5 wins. These included Ashton Boys (a Hanham Minor League side and thus used to playing a decent level of competitive football) and Jamie Shore Academy (a commercial outfit who select players from across Bristol).

Our squad all performed to their potential with all players making contributions, supporting each other and all patiently (in the most part...) waiting for their turn to play. Our ability to rest players across a long afternoon and still field equally strong sides for each game was key to our overall performance and the strong showing in the semi and the final . The coaches hope that the players who didn't get on in the final are fully aware of their contribution. We were delighted by everyone's attitude on a cold, blowy day and would like to thank them all.

That the goals were shared round (Danny and Joey against Ashton Boys, Raul and Ian against Ashley Down, Sonny against Sefton Park, Joey against Jamie Shore and finally Jack, Nick and Joey against Clifton) indicates the efforts of the whole team. At the back Seb, Ollie K, Owen and Ian took it in turns to shut out the opposition, leaving the excellent Archie to make only a few, but often crucial, saves. In seven games we concede only one goal in 'normal time'. Exceptional.

In the final we played Jamie Shore again having beaten Golden Hill Sonics in our semi with Joey, Archie and Sam starring in the extra time victory.

To say that we were in control throughout the final is not over doing it and, as with last year when Danny hit the woodwork, Seb could have won it for us in the second half when his long range shot hit the bar, bounced down and on to, but sadly not over, the line. Extra time saw us take a 1-0 lead in the dreaded three a-side finale. Jamie Shore nicked an equaliser and took it to golden goals. Chaos, confusion and a penalty decided the game and left many of the boys in tears.

Thanks to all of the players and to parents for the fantastic support throughout. The Year 5's did themselves and the club proud.

Year 5 v Ashley Down

Last game of the league season and another good sets of results.

The Foxes split into two equal squads, Ashley Down into an 'A' and 'B'. Four games and four wins to the Foxes was a good set of results. Both Foxes' squads beat the 'A' team 1-0, Jack C scoring wonder goal in one game. The other games were a bit more one sided but across the whole morning we played good football, worked hard for each other and took our chances.

Pyrrhic Victory costs Y4 Foxes the Clifton Tournament 15th May

The Clifton United 7-a-side Tournament was the first fully competitive tournament that the Y4 Foxes had ever played. In a tough competition attracting some of the very best local teams, we began in a league with 4 other teams. It was a voyage into the unknown. But in an afternoon filled with drama, tension and not a little controversy, they covered themselves in glory and left everyone who saw their football bursting with pride.

Tournament Squad: Josh, Harrison, Jack, Stanley, Tee-Jay, Henry, Rohan (goalie), Joseph, Matthew, Ludo

We set up for the tournament with Rohan in goal, Jack as sweeper, Matthew and Henry sharing the mid-field defensive responsibilities, Tee-Jay, Ludo and Josh sharing midfield “generalissimo” roles, and Stanley, Joseph and Harrison providing our rapid strike force. All were to play their roles in a brilliant afternoon of excellent football.

League Match 1 – Shire Colts
A baptism of fire against one of the best. On a sloping pitch we attacked from the off but despite our best efforts went one down to a well-organised Shire Colts team that passed the ball well. However, it wasn’t long before we drew level as Stanley showed his superb skills, latching on to a long goal kick from Jack to rattle the back of the net. Joseph gave us a second and a well-deserved victory. It was great to see the Foxes settle into their passing game and, with Ludo leading by example, come back after going a goal down.

League Match 2 – Stoke Lane B
As runners-up in the top division of the Hanham Minor League, Stoke Lane started as one of the tournament favourites. It was going to be another tough match. Chances were few for both sides. Rohan kept goal superbly and Jack and Tee-Jay kept the Stoke Lane attack at bay. An illegal back pass by their defence should have given us a free kick on the edge of the box, but confusion over the rules (which took several lengthy conversations after the match to sort out) resulted in the ball being placed in the wrong spot and our long shot went wide. Harrison came closest after some superb midfield teamwork, but it was not to be. We shaded the performance but could not turn superior play into goals.
Result: Foxes 0: Shire Colts 0

League Match 3 – Clifton United Green
Clifton took to the field with their goal-stopping keeper, Charlie, in place. We knew we had to win to have any chance of progressing and the Foxes did not disappoint. A fine drive from Harrison went through the keeper’s hands and we were ahead. Matthew in defence was never really troubled and Josh, Henry and Tee-Jay dominated the midfield. Goals from Joseph, Harrison (twice) and Tee-Jay ensured a fine victory, despite Clifton scoring a consolation goal when their keeper did emerge from goal in the second half. A fine result and an excellent performance that drew compliments from the opposition coaches.

League Match 4 – Golden Hill Sonics
We went into the final group match within touching distance of qualification for the knock-out stages. But only a win would guarantee our place. From the whistle we were dominant, wining the ball from the Sonics and passing through the team for Joseph to score straight away. Joseph then added to his total and was joined on the score sheet by Tee-Jay and Josh in a very one-sided match.
Result: Foxes 4: Golden Hill Sonics 0

Semi-Final – Stoke Lane A
Without a break we headed into a semi-final. As winners of our group we were drawn against the runners-up of the other group. Having played on game fewer (one of their group had pulled out) and well rested before the match, they came out all guns blazing. The Foxes were fearsome. Every player ran their heart out. Ludo and Tee-Jay pulled the strings in mid-field, Jack and Henry barricaded our defence, Rohan guarded goal and Harrison and Stanley terrorised on the attack. Soon the pressure paid and Harrison scored the first goal. We kept the pressure up but in the second half limbs started to flag and Stoke Lane eventually equalised.

The match then went into a nail-biting, and ultimately controversial 3 v 3 extra time play-off. No one, including the poor ref, really knew how this was supposed to be played, but after some superb defending by Ludo and a brilliant tackle by Stanley, Harrison was sent through. Free from any defenders, he sprinted half the length of the pitch to run the ball in. We all thought that was it and we had won. Stoke Lane complained that they had a player down and that the ref should have stopped the game. After several minutes, and a few stiff words, it was decided that we had to play on, but that the goal would stand.

Stanley had injured himself in the tackle and left for the first aid tent. Joseph came on. Brilliant, dogged defence, including a goal line clearance from Harrison kept Stoke Lane out. It was only when Joseph took a long shot, which Harrison sprinted onto to tap in, that the final whistle blew. Exhausted bodies celebrated a wonderful win.

Final – Rockleaze Rangers
Yet again we were given no time to recover and this time it cost us dearly. Again we were up against a side that had played one game less and had had long recovery periods. Stanley was off injured; Harrison left after a minute, barely able to walk, and Ludo and Joseph played on but were clearly “out of gas”. Despite a magnificent effort from Rohan, Jack, Matthew, Henry and Tee-Jay we just did not have enough left to really challenge Rockleaze. They played well and deserved their first goal. However, the second came after a player appeared to kick the ball out of Rohan’s hands. The ref let it stand and we accepted his decision.
Result: Foxes 0: Rockleaze Rangers 2

On reflection, the semi-final turned out to be a Pyrrhic victory. The physical and emotional toll on our players put paid to any real chance of winning. Combined with having played more games, the last 3 of which were back-to-back, our chances of competing in the final on an even footing were minimal.

However, the Y4 Foxes were truly magnificent today. Every single one of them gave everything they had for the team. The goalkeeping was brilliant; the defence commanding and stubborn; the midfield majestic and full of sublime skills, and the attack was the deadliest in the tournament. The Foxes scored more goals than anyone else (by some way!) and had the best goal difference of all the teams. We finished runners-up in name only.

For a school-based team, founded on inclusion, today was a day when we should all be very proud of the Foxes. They played with grace, with passion, and with breath-taking skill. Always sporting, they were in many eyes, the best team of all. Congratulations!

Y4 Foxes have another Golden Day against the Sonics 26 March

18 eager Foxes turned up for a late kick-off away at Golden Hill Sonics. We split into two even squads to play 2 matches each against a club with some outstanding players that has given us some tough matches in the past.

Green Squad: Billy, Brody, Eddie, Henry, Isaac, Josh, Sam, William LP, William W.

Match 1
The Foxes started slowly, gong behind from the first Sonics attack, due to some poor concentration. However, the boys soon got themselves in gear. The result was our signature fast flowing football using the small pitch to our advantage. Three goals followed. Josh struck first, taking his chance after a quick throw. Henry produced some lovely work on the right before Sam finished for our second. The third was a contender for goal of the season. Eddie moved into attack in the second half and produced a Thunderbolt that rocketed into the back of the net.
Result: Foxes 3: GH Sonics 1

Match 2
Again a lapse in concentration at the start cost us dearly as Sonics struck first. Once they switched on the Foxes produced a commanding performance, solid in defence and totally in control in midfield. The goals flowed. Henry started the rout with a well-taken individual effort. Josh gave us the lead after a lovely pass from Sam. Josh returned the favour minutes later, with another lovely pass for Sam to score. Josh added our fourth with a trademark tap-in after William LP’s shot was deflected. William’s efforts were then rewarded when a cracking shot gave us our fifth. 6 minutes in extra time (!) Sonics got a late consolation from a wonderful free kick.

White Squad: Caleb, Ewan, Harrison, Jack, Joseph, Matthew Y, Oskar, Rohan, Tee-Jay.

Match 1
The Foxes were evenly matched to begin with. And although we made some good chances the Sonics kept us at bay. The breakthrough came when Joseph pressed the opposition hard and the ball fell to Ewan who produced a lovely strike for the first goal. Fantastic keeping from Rohan, including a spectacular save kept us ahead. Tee-Jay played superbly all afternoon, his slide tackles timed to perfection. But it wasn’t just a defensive display. Tee-Jay came close after spinning onto a shot but the second goal would not come. Joseph crossed to Harrison but his shot went just wide. Eventually the pressure and passing play paid off. Joseph latched on to a poor clearance from the Sonics to close out the match.
Result: Foxes 2: GH Sonics 0

Match 2
Keen to take an unbeaten record from the fixture, the Foxes again started well. Tee-Jay won the ball on the right of midfield and delivered a far post cross for Harrison to tap in. The Sonics then produced some great individual play as their best player almost dribbled through the entire team. But our defence of Jack, Caleb, Matthew and Oskar were a match for him. We were warned. Matthew was tasked to mark him man-for-man and did a superb job, nullifying the threat. Tee-Jay added a second after Joseph delivered from Harrison’s quick throw-in. Although Sonics pulled on back, Harrison put the game out of reach when he took a corner on the far left that sailed directly into the net. A great team effort.

Overall the morning produced some of the best football the Foxes have played. Great team work and lovely football. Everyone played really well as we dominated a very good Sonics side and came away with 4 wins from 4. Brilliant – well done!

Y4 remain unbeaten against Clifton United 16 March

Despite missing a few of our regulars (party!) 16 Foxes turned up for the return fixture, at home, against Clifton United. The question on all spectators’ lips was could the quality of the football live up to the fantastic sunny spring day? The spectators were not to be disappointed!

Green Squad: Brody, Matthew Y, Caston, Caleb, Joseph, Stanley, Sam, Tee-Jay

Match 1
In the first game Caston took guard between the posts, Brody and Caleb in defence, Joseph and Tee-Jay in midfield, Stanley and Sam up front and Matthew on the subs’ bench. From the kick-off the Foxes applied long periods of pressure on the Clifton defence. Many chances were created but Clifton United's goalkeeper was in terrific form, making many point blank saves from Stanley, Joseph and Tee-Jay. Clifton were dangerous on the break, particularly from their goal keeper’s long kicks which put the Foxes defence and goalie under a great deal of pressure. Stanley finally scored the equaliser.
Result: Foxes 1: Clifton 1.

Match 2
In the second game Tee-Jay started in goal, Matthew and Caleb in defence, Brody and Joseph mid-field, Stanley and Caston in attack. The Foxes were quickly into their stride with Stanley scoring early to settle the team's nerves. The mid-field of Joseph and Brody worked really hard to create plenty of chances for the forwards and Matthew played a sweeping role in defence, snuffing out Clifton's attacks. Tee-Jay and Matthew eventually swapped positions and Sam came off the subs’ bench to replace Stanley. Joseph created all sorts of problems for Clifton's defence with his close ball control and dribbling. Joseph was rewarded with two goals to make it 2-0 then 3-0 to the Foxes. A great result.

White Squad: Rohan, Eddie, Billy, Ludo, Josh, Oskar, William LP, Mini-Matt

Match 1
A frantic start from the Foxes created a bombardment of chances against a resilient Clifton defence. The mini dynamo that is Matt commanded the right wing creating cross after cross for the strike force of Ludo and Billy (who were joined regularly from the back by our defender WLP!!). Oskar helped to snuff out any midfield threat with Eddie ensuring all was tight at the back. Whilst Rohan in goal didn't have much to do in terms of shot stopping, his kick outs were decisive in penetrating the Clifton midfield.

The Foxes’ breakthrough finally came with a tactical switch, bringing Josh on for WLP, moving Oskar to the back and getting Josh to provide some typically robust intervention in the middle. A lovely passing move by pretty much all of the Foxes team saw Ludo finally smash the ball into the Clifton net at 8 minutes. The rest of the game saw the Foxes grow in confidence and concentration, not allowing the Clifton team any chances.
Result: Foxes 1: Clifton 0.

Match 2
Game 2 saw us up against a stronger Clifton side with a couple of their star players on the pitch including an excellent goalkeeper. However, the Foxes had really settled into their stride and produced a fantastic display of passing, awareness and teamwork.

Rohan was a little busier in this game and once again his fantastic kick outs were vital in the Foxes’ attack. Eddie and Billy were confident and solid at the back, never once panicking in the face of the Clifton attack. Midfield and attack ebbed and flowed with Mini Matt once more instrumental down the right; Ludo and Josh powering through the middle, and Oskar providing some neat passing play with WLP whose speed constantly troubled the opposition.

The goals were beautiful. Ludo, with a mazy run and lovely touch of skill managed to score in the first minute. The goalie didn't stand a chance. The second goal soon followed after great interplay between the Foxes’ midfield and attack, Ludo providing the final killer pass for Josh to tap in at the far post.
Result: Foxes 2: Clifton 0.

A great game played against a Clifton side who didn't let their heads drop and gave us 2 challenging games, both played in a friendly and sportsmanlike way. Man of the match was a difficult one, but given to Mini Matt for his tireless running, precision passing and enthusiasm.

Well done to all the lads! Thank you to all the Foxes players who really worked hard in both games. Thanks must also go to Clifton United who were very sporting and friendly opponents.

Year 5 Boys v Golden Hill Sonics,

A beautiful day on the Downs. Some great football against a talented and well organised Sonics squad. Two wins and two defeats.

The Foxes split into two squads. Andy and Dave looked after Archie, Sam P, Jack C, Harry, Raul, Harri, Ian, Max, Ollie K and Danny. The first game was against the Sonics 'A' team who played good, passing football from the off. the Foxes took a two goal lead through efforts from Jack and Danny but then relaxed and the Sonics stormed back. A late fee-kick took them into a 3-2 lead and a well-deserved lead. The second game ended 4-2 with a hat rick from Nick and one from Harri.

Graham looked after the other squad Owen, Aidan, Sam L, Ollie C, Sonny, Seb, Alec, Jacob, Ollie S and Joey. The first game saw the Foxes win 4-0 but again we came up short against the Sonics 'A' team, against losing 3-2.

The Sonics deserved their two wins and the Foxes learnt some important lessons about teamwork and doing the simple things properly.

Year 5 vs Clifton Utd - 19th March

Ahhhhh, it was a glorious spring day as 12 year 5 Foxes crossed the Suspension Bridge to take on Clifton Utd. This weeks travelling contingent included Omar, Jack T, Ollie C, Ollie K, Max, Joey, Aidan, Harry F. Seb, Sonny, Alec and Archie.

The format of the day's play was 8-aside, with the coaches deciding on a 2-3-2 formation and two 40 minute games.

Match One.In the first half the Foxes started brightly with some good passing and movement against a well organized Clifton side. Seb was imperious in defence which lead to a clearly over-excited Foxes coach to exclaim - 'It's just like watching Bobby Moore!'- and the team was thankful more than once for Aidan's positional play at the back allowing for Seb to move up and help influence the play. The single goal of this half came as the front two combined with Max gathering a pass from midfield turned and played a pass into Sonny path who coolly slotted the ball past the keeper.

The midfield worked well all half with some great running from Alec and Harry on the wings and Ollie K bossing the centre. 1-0. Second half and on came Joey, Omar, Ollie C. and Jack. With the substitutions the Foxes lost their shape to start with allowing Clifton to come into the game and to score when a ball came through a crowd of players to beat an unsighted Archie. 1-1, game on - but this only acted to galvanise the Foxes and once again the midfield started to find some rhythm. A fine pass from Ollie C. lead to another cool finish from Sonny, then a cracking cross from Joey lead to what may have been an O.G. although I think Ollie C. claimed a touch. Two more goals folowed, one for Omar and then, after four great saves by the Clifton keeper Joey scored. Unlucky for the Clifton Keeper who also played well all day. 5-1.

Match Two. The foxes came out and dominated from the start. Goals from Omar and then Joey set us on the way. Five more followed before half time - with Alec, Ollie and Joey adding to the total before Max played in Omar who finished well and the added another for his hat rick. In the second half Clifton came out reorganized and started to combine well working Archie a couple of times and beating him once only for Seb to clear from the goal line. Sonny almost scored from a fine volley after fine close control in the box. 7-0.

The coaches were very pleased with all the hard work that the team put in. Another fine display by all the boys who played against a Clifton side who can consider themselves unlucky at the final scores. Also for the great travelling support from the parents.

Year 5 vs Sefton Park, 12th March

The Foxes took a squad of 12 to Kellaway Avenue and enjoyed two very competitive and exciting games, winning both, 3-1 and 2-1, with all of the 12 contributing well on a compact and fast pitch, playing 8 a side.

In the first game, the first half went from end to end, with the ever-busy striking twins Raul and Jacob coming close, before Sefton Park exploited the temporary absence of the Foxes defence to slot home. Danny then showed the benefit of 'playing the whistle', blasting home a long-ish range effort to level the scores close to half time, after the ref had waved play on following a suspected handball - not by him (video footage below allows you to judge for yourself). Four subs came on for the second half, and with his very first touch of the ball the deadly Jack C fired home from close range into the roof of the net to give the Foxes the lead. A third later followed when a Stoke- style long throw in was turned in off a combination of Nick's right foot and a defender's legs. Good performances all round, with particular mention for Ollie S's powerful runs down the middle and right wing.

The second game saw a succession of Foxes attacks, many resulting in inswung corners on the small pitch, with Raul leaping and getting his head to most of them, coming closer to scoring every time. Finally the deadlock was broken when sustained pressure on the ball in defence resulted in Sam L being a yard out and making no mistake. The Foxes couldn't seem to add a second, despite one Raul headed effort cannoning off the crossbar and onto the goalline. Then a swift and incisive break from Sefton Park, and some defensive hesitation, saw a blue shirt blast in from six yards out, to huge cheers from the home crowd. But it didn't last long...Ian, charging into the box from the right, produced a superb Finn-ish (sorry..) to make it 2-1. The drama wasn't over yet, as a long range Sefton Park blast seemed destined for the bottom corner until Owen dived spectacularly to his left and palmed it around the post. From then on, the Foxes kept the ball and applied pressure until the end, coming out 2-1 winners in a real thriller.

Special mentions also to Seb for snuffing out so many blue attacks, many calm touches from Sam P, a welcome and energetic outfield run out for Archie, and Sam L as a constant and tireless threat down the left. Everyone played and conducted themselves very well in a thoroughly enjoyable and sporting encounter. Now over to the 'Clifton 12' for next week.....

Y4 have Jekyll and Hyde day against Bishop Road 12 Feb

The sun was shining and all was good on the Downs. Or so it seemed. 20 Foxes turned up for their home fixture against Bishop Road. Trouble was, Bishop Road weren’t there. When they did arrive, it was so late that this, combined with early leaving commitments from 10 of our players meant that our squads effectively picked themselves. Despite the potential for slight imbalance, we still fielded two strong teams.

Match 1
Squad: Josh, Caston, Billy, Matthew Y, Matthew-Jaye, Benji, Brody, Jamie, Jack, William LP.

On a large pitch we played 8-a-side and all were under instruction to use the space and play it wide. By contrast, Bishop Road adopted the “8-man-defence” tactic. For reasons that remain a mystery, the Foxes seemed to abandon the team passing game that they can play so well and decided it was every man for himself. Perhaps over-confidence was to blame. The result was a crowded middle of the pitch and a messy game with far too many attempts to dribble through the entire defence even when support players were available in space.

Attack after attack came to nothing. There was not a single cross in the first half and shots were taken from impossible angles when easier options went begging. Eventually our profligacy became our downfall. A quick counter attack, Bishop Road’s only real attack of the entire game, resulted in them taking the lead.

After half-time, we did improve, as Billy and Caston stayed wide and our midfield, led by Matthew-Jaye, tried to pass our way out of trouble. The game started to flow better and we were rewarded when Josh made the only cross of the day for Matthew-Jaye to score an equalizer. Despite dominating, we continued to dribble when passing was the better option and the game finished in a draw. Bishop Road celebrated as if they had won the cup and who can blame them?

Man of the Match: Matthew-Jaye for a stand-out performance in midfield and a well-taken goal.

Match 2
Squad: Oskar, Eddie, William W, Sam, Henry, Ludo, Joseph, Harrison, Stanley, Caleb.

Different team, same instructions, completely different result. From the whistle, our midfield of Sam, Henry and Ludo completely controlled the game. Our defence was superbly marshaled by Eddie, William, Caleb and Oskar. And our strike force of Stanley, Harrison and Joseph created chances and scored self-less goals almost at will.

We took the lead immediately and then set about scoring goal after goal. Despite the risk of disruption from regular substitutions, we dominated completely – everyone playing their part in a fantastic team performance. The 10 goals were richly deserved and well taken:
1. Ludo – a great individual effort started in midfield.
2. Harrison – finishing a cross from Joseph after Sam had won the ball.
3. Harrison – a tap in after Henry won the ball in the middle and Joseph supplied the final pass.
4. Sam – finishing off a great team move.
5. Ludo – starting the move with a great dribble in midfield before laying off to Harrison and finishing the return cross.
6. Joseph – a great finish after Stan cut in to supply Henry for the final pass.
7. Joseph – another move that began with Ludo’s pass to Stanley for the cross.
8. Stanley – a brilliant volley to finish a lofted cross from Joseph after Henry had supplied the first pass. The goal of the game.
9. Harrison – his hat-trick goal from a lovely pass by Oskar out wide.
10. Joseph – his hat-trick goal, a tap in from another Oskar cross.

A superb display of passing, crossing and finishing from a team that played for each other throughout, and was never threatened. Well done!

Man of the Match – William W for a comprehensive display of defensive football, snuffing out any danger before it could develop.

Year 5 vs Bishop Road, 12th February

The sun shone which made a change after the sideways rain, gale force winds and freezing cold of previous weeks. The Foxes had two sides with staggered start times which, when sleepovers, car shares and other social arrangements were taken into account, led to the sqauds picking themselves.

Team one had Archie Owen Nick Alec Jack C Jack T Jacob Raul Sonny Harri and Seb.

The first match had an elongated 20 minute first half and was end to end stuff.In the first minute BR took the lead, moving the ball well down the right and forcing a good save from Owen. Unfortunately as Owen saved, his momentum appeared to carry him over the line. So 1-0 to BR, but Foxy heads didn't drop and we started to find our way in the game leading to a great move Nick giving the ball to Alec on the right who gave it back to Nick who crossed well and Jack C scored coming in on the far post to play the ball back across the keeper. BR then countered and once again good attacking play down the right lead to another well taken goal. The Foxes engineered another well worked move, with Nick once more the provider and Jack C once more the scorer. BR then scored a third after a great cross from the left came off an unlucky Foxes player for an own goal. A couple of minutes later the same thing happened at the other end with an unlucky BR player putting the ball into his own net from a good Foxes cross. Halftime, and we all caught our breath. The second half was reduced to 8 Minutes to make up for the long first and the time flew by with good football from both sides but no more goals. 3-3

Special mention to Archie who came on for an injured Seb and who worked hard at the back and showing some fine defending and distribution.

The second match was a far cagier affair than the first and was settled by some 'route one' football from the Foxes as Archie's goal kick was latched onto by Sonny who coolly slotted home a fine goal. 1-0

Team two had Ollie K Ollie S Ollie C Danny Aidan Omar Sam L Ian and Max

Match Three saw a hard working Foxes side edging the first half with good passing play,control and eventually the cutting edge with a great goal from Omar. BR were also passing the ball well and the Foxes were thankful for smart play and a string of good saves from Danny. In the second half we lost our shape a bit and our midfield played too far forward giving BR far too much space and despite a series of good tackles from Jack T as our last line of defence BR scored a deserved equaliser. 1-1

Match Four was another close affair but a great break-away goal from Omar in the first half proved to be the difference and in the second half the Foxes 'shut up shop' with Ollie S. and Aidan at the back holding their positions and clearing up behind a hard working midfield. 1-0

The coaches were very pleased with the hard work both squads put in and with the quality of play against a very good BR team.

Y3 Girls V AEK Boco

The first outing for the Y3 girls and a trip to Hanham to take on AEK Boco. The chosen format was 4 ten minute matches, in order to give the large but young Boco squad a chance to all get some playing time. On big pitch the girls did well to keep running for so long, and with a healthy total of 8 goals scored and none conceded the Foxes were triumphant in all of the matches, winning 1-0, 2-0, 3-0 and 2-0. Y4 canter to victory away against Clifton United 5 Feb

A howling gale greeted the 18 Foxes who found their way to Clifton United’s ground at the Clifton College Sports Centre. This was the first time Clifton had enough players in our year group to fulfill a fixture, so it was a voyage into the unknown. A late start and some confusion about how many games we would play was eventually sorted and we split into two squads to play one 30-minute 8-a-side match each. On a large, sloping pitch, the wind threatened to take control of both games.

Match 1

Team: Brody, William LP, Eddie, Oskar, Stanley, Henry, Ewan, Sam and William W.

Playing downhill with the wind seemed like a good idea to begin with but it was soon obvious that the ball would run away if not kept under control. Playing against unfamiliar opposition, the Foxes were a little tentative to start but soon got into their stride. William LP began in goal with a strong defence and solid midfield in front of him. Soon Henry and Stanley were combining well up front – passing accurately to each other to create great chances. One move found Henry perfectly positioned in front of goal but he unselfishly laid it on and we were crowded out. Minutes later, William W began a lovely passing move, finding Eddie who in turn found Stanley in space out wide. Stanley slotted a pass to Henry and this time he took his chance to give us the lead.

In the second half, Oskar accepted the goalkeeping duties and produced a match-winning performance. Clifton continued to play well and as we pushed defence we were caught several times on the counter attack. Despite being outnumbered, Oskar pulled of some great saves, including one tip-over from a strong strike. Eventually continued pressure paid off. Eddie raced down the wing and delivered a lovely cross. Stanley met the ball but hit the post. He controlled the rebound to smash it beyond the keeper. Sam, William LP and Brody all troubled the opposition and Ewan came very close to scoring a third goal after finding space and latching on to a fine cross from Stanley.

Match 2

Team: Matthew Y, Isaac, Matthew-Jaye, Jack, Ludo, Tee-Jay, Josh, Joseph and Harrison.

A long wait in the cold, wet and windy conditions could not dampen the spirits of the second Foxes team as they took to the field. Again we began playing down hill and despite our pace, the wind and slope combined to rob us of several chances. Tee-Jay took the first stint in goal; Jack and Isaac defended with skill and determination (aided by an extraordinary defensive header from Harrison); Matthew-Jaye, Matthew Y and Josh worked tirelessly in midfield pressing forward and Harrison and Joseph gave us pace and width on both wings. Ludo was a revelation. His midfield control was all consuming – snuffing out attacks before they could develop and using his awesome ball control to round the opposition before setting our attack on its way. Our first goal originated in midfield – Matthew Jaye fed Joseph wide on the right. Harrison held his position and was rewarded with the Foxes first goal. Many more chances followed but Clifton United had their largest and best player in goal who made save after save to keep them in the game.

The second half saw Clifton change their goalkeeper - a fatal mistake. With the ball now at their feet, every one of the Foxes played attractive flowing football. Tee-Jay swapped with Matthew Y and soon established himself on the left of midfield. Cutting in, Tee-Jay hit a magnificent strike that took a deflection off a Clifton head to wrong foot the keeper. Josh got on the end of a cross from Harrison to touch it over the line for our third. Harrison then showed great individual skill to bamboozle 2 defenders before adding the fourth. Jack remained all-powerful in defence and Ludo, Tee-Jay and Matthew-Jaye were ever skillful in midfield. In a rare attack, Clifton won a corner that we failed to clear properly. Despite stopping the save, Matthew Y spilled the ball and in the scramble Clifton pounced for a consolation goal. But the Foxes were far from done. As we threatened their goal again, Harrison was brought down and awarded a free kick within range of the goal. This is Harrison’s killing zone and he did not disappoint. Going uphill and over the top of some big players, his strike hit the roof of the net - a fabulous hat trick! It was a tremendous team performance.

Result: Foxes 5: Clifton United 1

Everyone played brilliantly in extremely difficult conditions against unknown opposition and their sportsmanship was a credit to them. Fantastic stuff!

Y4 Foxes rock solid away against Bishop Road 22 Jan

21 Foxes braved a bitterly cold winter’s morning to take on Bishop Road at their ice-hardened ground. With only 1 pitch available, and engagements elsewhere pressing, we decided to split into 3 equal teams.

Match 1

Team: Brody, William LP, Billy, Ludo, Rohan, Isaac and Joseph

The Foxes started the game with a very strong defence of William LP, Brody and Isaac, which allowed the mid-field (Joseph and Rohan) and forwards (Ludo and Billy) to attack straight from the kick-off. Ludo and Joseph immediately started to create chances and the Foxes went close to scoring on several occasions. The deadlock was broken by Ludo who deservedly put the Foxes in front. This was followed shortly afterwards by a fine goal from Billy. Half time brought a change of goalkeeper with Brody replacing William LP. Based on the Foxes’ first-half display the spectators were anticipating further goals but a little bit over-confidence seemed to creep in with all players eager to push forward, resulting in the team loosing shape and the mid-field becoming very crowded. However, any threat from Bishop Road was dealt with before becoming a significant danger to the Foxes’ goal. Well done to the players from both sides who braved the very cold conditions and who played the game in a real sporting spirit.

Match 2

Team: Jamie, William W, Jack, Sam, Tee-Jay, Benji and Henry

A strong Foxes team was up against a resurgent Bishop Road side. The Foxes were on fire in this match, eager to show their coaches lessons learnt from training on the Downs. Jamie started in goal, William and Jack providing a strong defensive line. Benji, Tee-Jay and Sam providing a flowing midfield with Henry our target man up front. From the ref’s first whistle it became apparent that Bishop Road were no match for the intricate passing and vision of the Foxes. Tee-Jay's first goal came quickly following a sublime pass from Henry. Great moves and strong defence didn't allow Bishop Road to threaten our goal and soon Tee-Jay showed great strength as he added 2 more goals to his tally – a Foxes hat-trick! In the second half Tee-Jay's shooting boots were rested with a turn in goal, Jamie slotting in nicely to provide strength and depth in midfield. Henry soon added a 4th goal with the keeper standing no chance. The Foxes 5th and final goal was a thing of beauty. Jack, spotting the Bishop Road keeper off his line, expertly lobbed the ball from the halfway line to drop into the net. Beckham couldn't have done it any better! A dominant, well deserved result. Every single player should be proud of the way they played in this match: great positional sense: passing when needed, and shooting when the opportunity arose. Well done lads!

Man of the match: Tee-Jay - not just for the hat trick but also his all round play.

Match 3

Team: Matthew Y, Oskar, Matthew-Jaye, Josh, Ewan, Stanley and Harrison

Despite hanging around in the cold for the best part of an hour and a half, the last Foxes team was like caged tigers, waiting to get on with the match. An outbreak of extreme fair play saw Harrison in goal and several other players trying their hand (should that be boots?) in different positions. Nonetheless, the result was never in doubt. We opened our account within seconds – Stanley latching onto a killer pass from Josh to score his first goal. Oskar, both Matthews and Ewan gave us a solid defence and midfield, allowing Stanley and Josh to combine beautifully going forward. Despite crowding their own goal area, Bishop Road could not keep the Foxes out. Josh lifted a great lobbed cross over their heads to Stanley, whose deft first touch enabled him to score his second. In the second half, Harrison emerged from goal and was soon terrifying the Bishop Road defence. A wonderful cross from Oskar on the right wing was met by Harrison in full flow with only one outcome – goal number 3. Josh made it 4 after he and Harrison combine in midfield. With over-confidence again creeping in, Bishop Road scored a breakaway consolation goal as we stood and watched. However, the Foxes continued to pepper their goal – any of 4 shots against the post and crossbar could have gone in - and only a good keeping display from Bishop Road kept the score down.

Yr 5 Boys v Clifton Utd

My, it was windy. And eventually wet. Very windy and very wet. Conditions that suited the Foxes better than our visitors but Clifton kept going to the end, grabbing a last-kick equaliser in one of the final round of games.

Two even squads and, until the weather took the edge off things a tad, high quality football. Three wins and one draw where well deserved. Highlights included: a return to the Foxes colours by Ollie Swales - marked with a well taken goal; a great defensive performance from Sam P in the first game; goals galore from Sonny; a great goal from Max; a high energy performance from Alec; etc, etc.

All played well but players of the week from each squad go to Ollie S and Sonny.

Yr 5 Boys vs Golden Hill Sonics - 29/01/11

Well that was better. After stumbling to defeat against a good Bishop Road side, the Foxes were back to winning ways against the Sonics. Phew.

The Sonics arrived unbeaten this season and brought two well-organised and competitive squads.

The Foxes split in two and from the first whistle played controlled football, supporting each other with discipline and scoring some eye catching goals.

The first squad won both of their games (6-0 and 4-0). Highlights included a fabulous strike from Ian into the roof of the net after good work from Danny, a goal which usually would have won any goal of the week award. But this time round it was pipped by a great individual goal from Joey. This taken with one of his best all-round performances for the Foxes made the man of the match award unusually easy for the coaches.

The other squad stormed to a 2-0 lead, looked comfortable, threatened to stretch the lead and then ended up drawing 2-2 as players started to drift out of position and try too much on their own. The second game, a 5-0 win, was a much more complete performance with the Foxes keeping their positions and doing the simple things well. Man of the match in this squad went to Nick for great goals and great effort throughout.

Well done all.

Year 5 Boys v Bishop Road

The year 5 Foxes had a bit of a wake up call when a strong Bishop Road squad came to the Downs and inflicted this year group's first Saturday defeat for some considerable time.

Ewan's squad (Omar, Alec, Jacob, Raul, Owen, Seb, Jack C, Jack T, Joey, Nick, Sam P) battled back strongly in their first game after falling behind to an early goal, and Jack C bagged a well deserved equaliser from close range. After that, a strong BR side edged ahead again after knocking in a rebound from their initial shot. The Foxes then played some good stuff, creating several chances, before losing a sucker punch third late on to lose 1-3.

In the second game, it looked all gloom and doom at half time. The Foxes trailed 3-0 to three slightly bizarre goals, two of them fairly soft and from defensive lapses, the third a long range lob over our unfortunate keeper. Some heads were beginning to drop and tempers fray in the freezing cold. But then... Joey, in a powerful display, swept through the BR defence to get one back early in the second half. Then it was wave after wave of Foxes attacks, with Jack C excelling down the left wing and Raul and Jacob both coming close. Joey then made the breakthrough by dribbling through the centre to slot home, then doing the same a few minutes later to complete his hat trick and level the scores. Roared on by the watching (freezing) parents, another attack came, Joey fed Nick who squared it to Jack C, and the ball was coolly slotted home for the Foxes to take the lead. A late highlight came when a BR goal attempt from point blank range was saved by goalie Omar with a 'scorpion' kick while lying face down on the ground, then hooked away by Owen. It finished 4-3, with good displays by everyone who took part, and took their turn as a sub, on a difficult and cold day.

Special mentions to Joey for his hat trick, Nick and Alec for their pace down the wings, and Jack T for his defensive bravery, but player of the squad this weekend was Jack C.

Dave's squad (Max, Danny, Archie, Harri, Ian, Sam L, Aidan, Sonny, Harry, Ollie C and Ollie K) did not have their best couple of games. They struggled to keep their positions and never really got going throughout a cold, cold morning. In the first game they were slightly lucky to be only 1-0 down at half time. This soon became 2-0 and after Danny got the final touch on a rare bright piece of play, Bishop Road finished the job with a well-deserved third goal.

The second game followed a similar pattern and only remained at 0-0 for so long due to a string of brave goal line clearances by the keeper and defence. Against the run of play Sam scored a good goal from a great through ball from Ian, but we conceded an equaliser almost immediately and never really got going in the second half as Bishop Road found the net twice more. 3-1 again.

Man of the match was Ian.

Bishop Road deserved to win 3 games to 1 on aggregate. They were better organised and did the simple things (passing, tackling, supporting each other) better than the Foxes. After some great performances this season hopefully this will only be a blip in another successful season.

22nd Jan: Y4 Girls' Inaugural Fixture vs. the BLUs

Many congratulations to the Y4 girls on their first competitive matches, played against the BLUs (Bristol Ladies Union) at Coombe Dingle last Saturday.

With only a few exceptions, the Y4 girls are new Foxes this year, so to play against such an established team was a tough challenge (BLU's Y4s are in their 2^nd season, and have played 6 competitive fixtures already this year).

It was a great turn-out from the girls on a cold morning - 15 eager players represents almost our entire squad, so very well done to the parents for remembering to not turn up at the Downs! We and the BLUs each split into 2 teams, so had 4 games in total.

It has been amazing to see the fantastic advances the girls have made since joining the Foxes, and Saturday demonstrated this even further. Although the Foxes started a little slowly, by the end they were fighting for every ball, defending like terriers, and being every bit as tenacious and canny as their proverbial namesakes in attack.

There were magnificent contributions from all of the team and the Foxes were rewarded with a couple of tremendous, pile-driving goals from Scarlett and Teya (also now our “long throw-in” expert). The posts were also shaved a couple of times with superb left-foot strikes from Ella, and further attacking support was provided by Grace, among others. Serious midfield battling and defensive efforts were seen from Anna, Amy, Lilica, Megan, Tabatha, Taryn, and Amelia (who somehow manages to maintain an impressive sense of fashion-consciousness even when tackling with laudable ferocity). Some truly stunning (and often brave) goalkeeping from the likes of Rhiannon, Luella and Ella, as well as committed and heroic defending from Holly and Madeline, kept the games really competitive.

A sneaky late goal robbed us of a deserved draw in the first game (finishing 2-1), and other results were 5-0, 5-1 and 4-0 against us, but the girls made the coaches very proud. We all had a good time, have all learned a great deal, and we will be back!

Thanks also to the many parents that came to support the Foxes - their enthusiastic (yet admirably sporting) encouragement was much appreciated.

Y4 make history against Rockleaze 15 Jan

For many, Rockleaze Rangers are the benchmark club against which to be measured. Over the past few years, our players have enjoyed several wins and many close matches against Rockleaze, but overall we have never won this fixture. Until now.

21 game Foxes turned up on a cold, overcast morning for the first competitive matches of 2011, itching to put some fine winter training performances into practice. There was a scent of victory blowing across the Downs as we split into two squads to take on 3 teams from the mighty Rockleaze.

Rob’s Green Squad: William LP, Brody, Eddie, Matthew W, Jamie, Sam, Henry, Joseph, Josh, Rowan and Tee-Jay.

Match 1 - started very brightly with the Foxes pressing Rockleaze back to defend for most of the first half. A goal for the Foxes by Henry was quickly followed by a second - Matthew W pouncing on a shot dropped by the keeper to put the Foxes 2 - 0 in front. A very observant Rockleaze coach, who obviously couldn't believe the Foxes were scoring so easily, alerted the referee that the Foxes were fielding 8 players (thanks Jim!) on the pitch compared to their 7 players. Graciously we invited Rockleaze to bring on an additional player to make the numbers even. The Foxes scored almost immediately after half time - a great finish by Henry for his second goal of the game. The quality of the football played by both sides was great to watch, with lots of movement off the ball to create space.
Result: Foxes 3, Rockleaze 0

Match 2 - was a harder fought game. Both sides created chances but some good goal keeping from Body and solid defending from Sam and Rowan prevented Rockleaze from scoring. Josh and Tee-Jay had difficult chances in front of goal but the game had 0 - 0 written all over it as the two sides were too evenly matched for either to break the deadlock.
Result: Foxes 0, Rockleaze 0

Match 3 – by now the Foxes were visibly tiring and the high level of concentration all the players had shown in the two previous games began to wane. The Foxes fell behind by two goals - a little harsh given the high standard of Foxes’ play. Joseph finished a fine solo run down the right wing with a great strike to bring the Foxes back into the game but Rockleaze scored one more to put the game beyond the Foxes in the final minutes.
Result: Foxes 1, Rockleaze 3.

Colin’s White Squad: Jack, Caleb, Caston, Matthew Y, Billy, Oskar, Ludo, Benji, Stanley and Harrison

Match 1 - a close contest in the first-half with much of the play alternating from end to end. Sound defensive work from Jack and Matthew kept a determined Rockleaze attack at bay. However, a fine move from Rockleaze saw them edging in front as we went into the break. The second half saw a galvanised Foxes team showing self-belief, spirit and determination with Harrison slotting an equaliser from wide on the right. Just as it looked like a draw being the only outcome, Stanley latched onto a beautiful cross from Harrison to calmly put the ball into the Rockleaze net – a classic training ground move - just as the ref blew for full time!
Result: Foxes 2, Rockleaze 1

Match 2 - a reshuffled line-up against Rockleaze’s strongest squad. They quickly took a 2-goal advantage over a stunned Foxes side. Despite the best efforts of Benji, Caston and Oskar in midfield, Rockleaze were able to put some good moves together to get through the Foxes' defences. The second-half saw more of the same as the Foxes were punished for some poor marking at the back and not clearing their defences quickly enough. Rockleaze added another 2 goals, the last on the final whistle that couldn’t come quickly enough. To the Foxes’ credit, they kept their heads held high and worked hard right until the end.
Result: Foxes 0, Rockleaze 4

Match 3 - saw a return to form for the Foxes. The whole team appeared to have learnt from the last game. Every single player played brilliantly, both individually and as part of the team. Jack was solid in goal, providing confident cover and some excellent kick-outs; Caleb and Billy showed tenacity at the back, thwarting any efforts from the Rockleaze attack; Oskar, Benji, Matthew Y and Caston provided great support in the middle, helping at the back when needed and supplying our attack when the opportunity arose, and Harrison and Stanley showed killer instincts, constantly harassing the Rockleaze defence. When the goals came, every one was a corker!
Goal 1 – a beautiful solo effort from Harrison, taking the ball around 2 players to slot in.
Goal 2 - another fine finish from Harrison who latched onto a great goal kick from Jack.
Goal 3 – a Matthew Y thunderbolt after pouncing on a poor clearance from the Rockleaze keeper.
Goal 4 - a first goal from Oskar who showed some great skill on the right wing and almost broke the back of the Rockleaze net with the power of his strike. A goal and a celebration to be remembered!
Result: Foxes 4, Rockleaze 0

Man on the Match:
Oskar for a brilliant overall performance and a cracking first goal.
Stanley for being involved all over the pitch and his tireless running.

Final result: Played 6, won 3, drew 1, lost 2, goals for 10, goals against 8. A great morning’s football against a very strong Rockleaze squad and hopefully a good omen for the rest of the year.

Yr 5 v Long Ashton, 15th January

It had been so long since the year 5s had played a match that it all felt a little unfamiliar as we got ready for the game against Long Ashton. Thankfully the rain, wind and mud of the Downs soon made us feel at home.

The Foxes split into two squads. Graham and Dave took charge of Sonny, Jack C, Seb, Ian, Archie, Max, Harry, Alec and Danny.

Their first game was against Long Ashton's 'A' Team - the side that play in the Woodspring Junior League. It was a close game. The Foxes worked hard as a team and kept their shape. Both sides had their chances and both teams had their goalies to thank as the first half ended Nil-Nil. After the break the game opened up and Long Ashton hit the Foxes on the break to score a good goal. To the our credit we kept our heads up and worked hard to create several good chances, but the Long Ashton keeper was up to the challenge. The visitors scored another good counter attacking to end up 2-0 winners. Man of the match was Ian for his great display alongside Seb in defence.

The second game against Long Ashton 'B's was a more one sided affair as the Foxes ended up scoring 6 good goals (Danny, Sonny and Jack claiming two each) as the team carried on playing a high standard of football. Congratulations to all, but Man of the Match goes to Alec for his tireless work on the right side of midfield.

Andy and Ewan's squad (Joey, Omar, Owen, Harri, Sam L, Jacob, Raul , Jacob and Ollie C) won both of their games - and in some style. Firstly against the 'B's Raul bagged 4 really well taken goals and with scoring Joey one, we ended up winning 5-1. Man of the match was Raul, for obvious reasons.

Against the 'A's we started strongly, were strong in the middle and ended, err, strongly too. Raul carried his goal scoring form into this game with two goals, the first was really well taken. Harri finished well from the edge of the area and with an own goal from a high quality Sam L corner the team ended up winning 4-2. Man of the match for a great all round performance, a goal and an outstanding last ditch tackle with the score at 1-0, Harri.

Well done to all. Long Ashton came with a strong set of players and the Foxes matched them throughout.

Arctic Foxes Battle Bravely in the wild north

Ok, we admit it.
It was cold.
-1 on the Official Foxy Freezo-meter.
3 inches of snow in Sophie McConnells garden.
Several mums and dads refused to get out from under the Duvet as the coaches drove by, picking up their eager Arctic Foxes.
What were most Rising 10 girls doing on that freezing saturday?
Staying in bed.
Playing some daft computer game
Finding a small brother to annoy.
Some even ventured out - to the shops.

Here is the Roll of Honour of 16 Brave Foxes who headed north, to the land of Frost and Falcons.

They shot - and scored. They dived - and saved.
One or two even took off their ski jackets.

Now it wasn't just cold football. It was tough football.
Thornbury are the League Champs at the mo, the best in the district. And last time, you may recall, they got rather thrashed by the Foxes ( 14-2 in 2 matches!). This time all parties had been cancelled, top stars recruited, special training organised.
In two matches, the girls held the Foxy name up high.

One team saw Ella, Sophie C, Megan and Tia up front, smattering the Thornbury woodwork, making their (annoyingly good) goalie dive in the snow. Behind them, Anna R and Paige kept the back door closed. Anna R has earned herself a bit of a reputation in this department, and once again she can be proud of her tackling and clearing skills.
But Paige, or "Precision Paige" as she is now known, was a revelation. Her second outing for the foxes, and she tackled like an old timer. Nice one girl!
Occasionally the Falcons got through - but only to find Bryony "safe hands" Wade in goal. No chance.
Sophie, Tia and Ella learnt a lot up front, missing by inches, hitting the post. Eventually when Bryony came up to join them, the pressure told and the goal went in.
1-1 final score - top work girls.

On the other pitch, the frost soon melted in the heat of battle. Thornbury struck hard and accurately, beating a top class defence of Sophie HR, Phoebe and Marielle. Early in the second half, it was 4-0.

And this was when the Foxes proudest moment came.

Not content with coming out in the snow, the girls decided not to give in to defeat. They literally shouted at each other "come on, we can still do this". Phoebe and Sophie HR tackled harder, and cleared more carefully. Emily B deployed her famous "cannonball clearance" to devastating effect. Marielle made some scorching saves.
Emily T was everywhere, Anna D harried and tackled and ran.
Then, up front, Sophie Mac put in a shot made up of pure hunger. The goalie had no chance: 4-1.
"We CAN do this" they cried, and indeed they could. Sophie scored again, Emily hit the post, Anna D put in a fabulous shot and made it 4-3.
All round, a fabulous morning from an unpromising start. Great running, great tackling, several nice passes.
Player of the week is hard to pick. But from Team 1: for diving, saving, running and scoring - Bryony. From Team 2 : for urging on her teammates, defending and passing, running end to end and making several goals - Emily T.
But every girl who played today is a Foxy Hero.

Foxy Footie Fiesta Fun 2010

A freezing morning.
The Downs wet and muddy with days of rain.
Did that stop the Fabulous Female Foxes from coming out to play?
57 foxettes turned out for the best ever Fiesta Saturday, and the chance to train with England Internationals and Bristol Academy Pros Corinne Yorston and Annie Heatherson

From reception all the way through Y6, the Foxes learnt new passing skills and even headers from two of Bristol's finest players.

Here's a report from one of the Y5 team, Sophie HR:

The Foxy Girls Footie Fiesta was extremely fun. I really enjoyed it because I knew that lots of girls, age 4-11, were being inspired and taught to play football and that maybe some of the girls that we saw at the fiesta may one day become professional footballers and teach some girls to play football and inspire them like the pros that came from Bristol Academy WFC. I think that everybody did really well, especially the new receptions, and I am very thankful to all who organised all that and all who came along!
The professionals were really nice and taught us without saying ‘That was rubbish!’ - which is harder than it sounds.

SUPER SOCCER SATURDAY - FOR GIRLS

Two of England's womens' soccer stars will join in the fun at the Foxes Footie Fiesta this Saturday (Nov20).

The Foxes are encouraging all girls to take part - learn some footie skills, get your face painted and enjoy some snacks.

The fun starts at 10am and will wind up at about 11.30am with the chance to chat to our England ladies, take pictures and eat cake.

Yr 5 Boys vs Shire Colts, 13th November

Four games, four wins, 18 goals for, 2 against. It's as if the success of the year 5 girls is just forcing the boys to go just one better. Well, can you imagine the playground otherwise?

After a little bit of too-ing and fro-ing in terms of exactly where the games would be played, 20 Foxes (again one better than the girls....)travelled to Sea Mills Park.

Graham was back, after a whole range of excuses of varying quality had kept him away over the previous few Saturdays, and coached his team to 5-2 and 4-0 victories. In the first game Raul bagged two and Omar three in a convincing win. The second game saw no let up in effort, passing and domination and the Foxes were rewarded with a clean sheet and two more goals for Omar, and one each for Joey and Jack C. Archie's complaints about being in goal with little to do for both games can still be heard.

Andy's lot started strongly with a fabulous goal involving Ollie K, Sonny and a great finish from Alec and then just got better and better. Ollie k scored two (the first another belter from the edge of the area)and young Danny three (his first goals of the season as the coach reminded him) including the goal of the game (which means it must have been pretty good)which involved beating three players and slotting a long range shot into the top corner. 6-0. The second game ended 3-0 with Sonny collecting a well-deserved hatrick.

The coaches could not ask for more and all the players did the Foxes proud with the quality of the football being a joy to watch.

Players of the week were Raul and Alec.

Buccaneers Bitten by Year 5 Foxes!

"There's nothing more satisfying than winning a local derby," said Sir Alex Ferguson, last week. For the first time in my life, I find myself agreeing with the man.

Y5 Foxes against Bishop Rd Girls is becoming a bit of a derby. The crowds are huge and noisy. Many of the players go the same parties and clubs. If you live in BS6 you have to choose your team.

We put out two eight-a-side teams and we still had subs on the bench. Yes 19 Foxettes turned out for the big day, and - let's do the numbers first - won a handsome victory. Won 3, lost 1; Scored 4, conceded 2. Whichever way you cut it, the Foxes won it!

Jo "The Motivator" Davis led out a strong team of Issy, Bryony, Anna R, Sophie C, Erin, Sophie M, Emily T, Ella T, Molly H and Sacha. Two very closely fought games got underway edgily, but up front Molly, Sophie C, Emily T and Sophie M put some relentless running and passing together and got plenty of shots on target. Bishop Rd, it's fair to say, have been investing in their goalkeeping programme and several sure shots were saved. When Sophie M finally found the net, the Downs erupted. At the back Issy and Erin kept our goal clear, only conceding once in the second game. Issy's legendary goal kicks cleared the Foxes out of danger again and again, launching the ball overhead to start a fresh attack. In defence Ella and Bryony tackled and never gave up, keeping the goalies out of too much trouble.
Results: 1-0 Win, 2-1 Win. Great games girls.

With Dave this week were Marielle, Abby, Sophie HR, Megan, Tia, Phoebe, Anna D, Emily B, and Paige. It was Paige's first action in Foxy strip and the coaches have one thing to say. "Come again Paige, we love you!"

The first game was tough, end to end stuff, with plenty of foxy attacks saved, and plenty of doughty defending too. Marielle saved several cracking shots, Emily B deployed her trademark "cannonball" to great effect, Abby tackled incisively. But eventually the Foxes were caught in a goalmouth melee involving a shot, a hasty hand and a chilling whistle. A free kick was given outside the area, and the girls deployed their first ever Wall of Foxes. Scary to behold, even scarier to be in ( I'm told!). An amazing shot from the Bishop Rd Striker cleared the top of the wall and even an acrobatic leap from Marielle could only get a hand on the ball as it hit the roof of the net.

Unsurprisingly they came out in the second game hungry for revenge. Abby and Sophie HR read the game well at the back, anticipating attacks and cutting them off. Phoebe made a few scorching runs through the centre, Tia tackled and harried in midfield. Then, out of the blue, a move. Phoebe, to Tia - she's into space, finds Anna D, now Phoebe again as the Bishop Rd defence regroup. But the Foxes are too quick and when Anna D hits the netting - well. Ear Defenders time folks.
Results: 0-1 Loss, 1-0 Win Great attitude girls, coming back from that free kick.

Afterwards, a great tunnel of sportsmanship for the visiting side, much shaking of hands and patting of backs.

For cracking goalkeeping, skillful midfield play, and most of all for swapping teams half way and playing anywhere on the park with a smile and some skill - IT'S ERIN!

Year 5 vs Shire Colts, 16th October

An unusually depleted (by a Cub trip) Y5 Boys squad, numbering just two teams of six with no subs, faced a squad of 18 from Shire Colts in two rounds of six-a-side matches.

Ewan's team had a truly international flavour, being one-third Finnish with the inclusion of both Ian and his friend Leevi. Joined by Joey, Sonny, Owen and Jack C, this team came storming out of the blocks in their first game, with impenetrable defence, quick passing and devastating finishing generating a 5-0 lead at half time. Debutant Leevi bagged two close range finishes, adding to a brace for Sonny and Joey's spectacular "triple-keepy-up-then-volley" finish from 20 yards. The Foxes eased off a little in the second half, and Shire Colts battled hard to earn a well-deserved late consolation from a long range shot to make it 5-1.

The second game looked set to to go the way of the first, after the Foxes took the lead through Sonny then proceeded to generate chances at such a rate that one admiring Shire parent compared it to watching Chelsea. But after a succession of almost comical Foxes' missed chances from extremely close range (including a miss from half a yard out), Shire Colts blasted an equaliser close to half time when the ref (Ewan) controversially called 'play on' after a collision in the box. The second half then ebbed and flowed. Sonny put the Foxes back in the lead, but then tiredness (with no subs to provide relief), lack of shape, too much individual effort at the expense of teamwork and occasionally flaring tempers saw the game shift Shire's way. The ref/coach had his hands full, facing criticism from both sets of supporters (including the Foxes' Chairwoman), and could only watch as the Foxes' defence went AWOL as Shire scored twice on the break. There were further chances for both sides as play became increasingly ragged, but Shire held on for a 3-2 win.

Player of the week for this team was: Ian

Dave's team consisted of Archie, Seb, Ollie K, Ollie C, Nick and Omar.

With no subs on the bench the boys faced a morning of hard work but this made life easy for the coach in deciding on the starting line-up: Archie in goal, with Seb and Ollie K at the back and a midfield diamond with Ollie C on the right, Nick on the left.and Omar in the middle playing just ahead of the other two.

The first game ended 5 - 0 in our favour. The boys were asked to let the ball do the work and for the most part that is exactly what they did, with a fine display of passing football. Our first goal was a route-oner, with Archie's long clearance clearing everyone except Omar who took his chance well. Two of the other goals stood out. One was a corner taken by Omar which fell for Nick who gave it back to Omar who passed it to Ollie K - and from the edge of the box he thumped it through the crowd and into the far corner. The second was a passing move involving all of the outfield players, Ollie K won the ball in our box gave it to Seb, who passed to Nick on the left, who gave it to Omar, who spread it to Ollie C on the right who gave it back to Omar who scored. Despite the score line, and the fact that their keeper made a string of good saves, Shire Colts were always dangerous on the counter but we can be pleased the by the style of football we played.

Match two was a far closer affair. We started a touch tired and could have gone behind in the first couple of minutes but for Archie's alert display in goal. The Foxes scored against the run of play and this settled the boys, who got stuck in and worked hard. A second goal followed but again the Colts passed the ball well and worked a few openings and we should be pleased by keeping a clean sheet.

Player of the week for this team being Ollie K.

Overall, the play of both teams was excellent, and with the addition of some subs, Cubs and more passing in the final third, the Y5 Foxes will continue to improve and surpass even last season's achievements.

Yr 5 vs Rockleaze

Another two games into the season and still unbeaten. As always we had loads of keen and eager and talented boys to pick from. As is increasingly common the opposition turned up with one team - so we split into two squads and, while one lot trained, the others took on Rockleaze Rangers.

Squad one (Danny, Archie, Sonny, Ollie K, Ollie C, Aidan, Ian, Jacob, Max, Jack T and Alec) started well and maintained a high level of passing throughout. How we slipped two goals behind remains a bit of a mystery. Both Rockleaze goals were well taken, the first by their stand-out player, but both were against the run of play. Never daunted the Foxes kept going and managed to pull back to level pegging by half time courtesy of a Sonny double - one from short range following yet another great Danny-corner and the second that could best described as high-class route one football. Second half the Foxes were never threatened, with the exception of one counter attack when Archie had to be brave and alert, and with Sonny completing his hatrick we ran out worthy winners.

Squad two (Owen, Seb, Harri, Harry, Joey, Nick, Sam L, Sam P, Raul, Omar) dominated their game, creating chance, after chance, after chance. One goal was disallowed, several chances were cleared off the line and several more were wasted as we passed, tackled, moved and created. All of the team played their part - to the extent were Owen (in goal) touched the ball on only three occasions. While the 0-0 result was frustrating - and the atmosphere the game was played in niggly at best - the Foxy coaches were delighted by the quality of our play and the sense of team spirit. The whole team deserved praise.

Promising Start for Y4 v Rockleaze 2 Oct

16 spirited Foxes emerged from their rain-battered dens to take on the full might of Rockleaze in a testing start to the season.

The Foxes were split into 2 squads to play 3 matches each at Stoke Lodge against one of our toughest opponents.

Squad 1: Brody, Eddie, Ewan, Jamie, Stanley, Josh, William L P, Matthew.

The first game was end to end with Rockleaze going one-up early. The Foxes quickly hit back. A lovely through-ball from Matthew allowing Stanley to find Josh perfectly positioned to tap in from close-range. A fantastic performance from Brody in goal kept the scores even going into half-time. The second half saw Rockleaze use the sloping pitch to their advantage adding to their score-line quickly. Stanley’s running and shooting game was rewarded only by resonating woodwork (or should that be plastic?) and a spectacular overhead kick from Josh was unlucky not to hit the back of the net. The Foxes were within snapping distance until the last few minutes when Rockleaze added two late goals. The 1-4 final score line not a true reflection of the game.

The second also game started brightly. Great defensive work by Jamie stopped some strong attacking moves by Rockleaze; Brody and Ewan combined well as they tried to get the ball up to our strikers, and Eddie’s superb diving save was not quite enough to stop a penalty. Our defence played with great resilience, but legs began to tire and the game finished 0-3.

The final game was a real tester as 3 matches on the trot started to take their toll. The Foxes played with great passion: Eddie and Ewan making some great runs down the wings; William LP coming alive to trouble the Rockleaze defence, and Matthew supplying pinpoint passes to Josh and Stanley, with Brody and Jamie keeping them out at the back. But once again, Rockleaze’s well-drilled attack and organised defence thwarted the Foxes. Final score 0-4. Despite the losses, these were 3 great performances on a large pitch against fresher opposition who had already had a fixture to get them into the groove.

Squad 2: Rohan, William W, Jack, Billy, Tee-Jay, Henry, Harrison and Joseph

Match 1. The long, wet grass and large pitch took some time to get used to and the Foxes went a goal down before they really started to click. Jack, Billy and William then repelled the Rockleaze attack, marshaled by some great keeping by Tee-Jay. Soon our strike force got going with Henry and Rohan securing the middle of the park allowing Joseph and Harrison to terrify their defence. The pressure told. Harrison supplied the ball to Joseph whose skills bemused the opposition before he opened our account. Some half time tactical adjustments gave us better balance and soon Joseph supplied a sublime cross for Harrison to finish. A thoroughly deserved 2-1 win.

Match 2. On a sloping pitch, the team maintained their winning momentum. Close marking and some superb defending by Jack and William neutralized Rockleaze’s most dangerous players. Meanwhile, Billy and Rohan powered through the midfield and Joseph continued to terrify all in front of him. A fantastic performance by Henry included a cross for Tee-Jay to hammer home and a powerful strike after Harrison’s endless determination had won the ball in the tackle. A peerless 2-0 win that left the opposition looking shell-shocked.

Match 3. The efforts of the previous matches began to tell as the Foxes lost a little concentration and went behind to fresher opposition. The whole team upped its game with some brilliant tackles from Jack and tireless running by Harrison, and were always a danger up front. Concerted team pressure brought a thoroughly deserved equaliser from Henry before the Foxes gave away some soft goals. The third Rockleaze team adopted the little seen “let’s put a player on your goal-line” tactic. Without offside, this led to two scrambled goals. A brilliant run and cross by Joseph found 3 Foxes in front of goal, but sadly we could not finish it. Result: a 1-3 loss against the run of play.

Man of the Match – Henry for a fabulous midfield and attacking display including 2 great goals.

Overall, some tactical lessons to be learnt, but all-round a hugely impressive and encouraging first performance – strong, organized defence, determined midfield and a selfless and skillful attack to challenge any team. Foxes to be proud of. Well done all!!

THORNBURY FALCONS ROUTED BY Y5 FOXES!

A sunny day on the Downs.

Another massive turnout from Y4 and Y5 girls.

And FOURTEEN GOALS FOR THE FOXES!

Two teams took on the Thornbury falcons, a strong team who have beaten us in the past.

And let's not beat around the bush, everyone played their green and white socks off. Several girls even played their boots off. There wasn't a passenger on the pitch, and the scoreline tells it all.

With Jo "its not that I'm competitive but I WANT TO WIN" Davis were Marielle, Sophie HR & Molly H in defence, Phoebe, Emily T and Anna D in midfield, Sophie M up front. This was a game where pressure told. Every Thornbury attack was neatly tackled at the back, and - what's this? - passed calmly up to the midfield where - blow me down! - shots were fired at the Thornbury goal. Their goalie was actually very good, and loads were saved.

You'd have thought our defence might have got bored, but actually they were busy too. Molly H had to come off with a brave injury, giving ELLA CLARKE her first ever taste of Foxy Action. She rose to the challenge, making some vital blocks and tackles. Sophie HR has really got the hang of reading the attacks, intercepting and feeding the hungry foxes in midfield.

After half time, Emily C and Anna R had a go, and frankly we might as well have built a brick wall across the foxy goalmouth. Never forget, the impressive part of this 9-0 ( oh yes) victory is the NIL bit.

Phoebe, Emily T, Anna D and Sophie M were everywhere. Several times I counted our players, it seemed like we had more than them! But no. And when Molly H came back from injury, she harried and ran amok too.

So to the well deserved score-sheet.

GOALS TO MOLLY H, SOPHIE M, EMILY T and a Hatrick to Anna D ( well, 4 in fact!)

Sally Silky Skills started with Emily B in goal, Abby and Molly R in defence, Tia, Megan and Ella W in midfield and Sophie C up front. Now these Foxy Stars have been seriously improving, but have struggled to find the killer kicks that actually score goals.

I have one thing to report:

5-2. Yes, that's FIVE GOALS TO US and 2 to them.

Again, a fast exciting game with plenty of action, which the Foxes deserved to win. At the back, Emily B had her first taste of goalie action, and made some great saves. Molly "clearly been on a soccer course" R had really stepped up her game. Several Falcons attacks came towards her, 2 or 3 players running fast and passing dangerously. Calmly, decisively, she picks her moment and the Falcons are downed. Abby and Megan had good games too, Abby taking a turn in goal to make some brave nick-of-time saves.

At half time, Sophie HR and Phoebe came on in midfield, showing little sign of tiring from the other non-stop match. Both used the space nicely, dribbling out of tackles and passing accurately to Sophie C and Ella in the attack.

And up front, what a transformation. Passing. Running with the ball. Running on to the ball. The sheer hunger of the Foxy attack left the crowd breathless. When Thornbury attacked, Tia tackled, turned, ran and passed to Sophie C, perfectly placed for a goal.

"Wow, they've got better!" gasped one.

"Look at Ella run" admired another.

"Is that a hatrick for Sophie Cliff?" roared a third, "she's amazing!"

OK, it was Sophie's mum, but she was right. Three goals for Sophie C, two for Ella W, but to be honest, they had everyone's name on them. Tia and Sophie HR set up a couple, Phoebe nearly scored.

But today the Foxes weren't content with nearly. Today, they pressed and pressed - and believed.

And if there was a word for the day, I'll go with Belief. Last week we told these girls that if they could convert enthusiasm into belief, they would win. Being obedient foxes, they did just that.

That makes well over 20 on the foxy roll of honour - well done girls.

Two teams took on the Bishop Rd Buccaneers.

With new coach Jo “another lap of the pitch” Davis were Marielle, Phoebe, Sophie HR, Anna D, Izzy, Bryony, Abby and Megan. In their first game they did everything more right than a right thing, but never quite found the net. Easily the best passing this coach has seen saw several moves worked all the way from defence to striker, with consistent looking up and picking out partners. Top work girls. Marielle and Izzy were, as ever, solid in goal with some brave saves and massive clearances.

Under the watchful eyes of Sally “silky skills” Wistow were Erin, Tia, Ella W, Ella T Molly H, Emily B, Sophie C, Emily C and Sacha. Again, some fine goalkeeping from Erin and Tia kept the Buccaneers at bay, and Molly H, Sophie and Ella W were dogged and determined up front. Tia invented a whole new cunning move, forever now known as The Tia Tackle. Basically, you suss out the opposition’s names, call out “Megan” convincingly, and they then pass to you. Saves all that messy going after the ball, getting your boot stuck in etc. Nice one Tia!

Without our two top scorers, Sophie M and Emily T, we struggled to find the goals, but maybe learnt more as a result. Full marks for determination and enthusiasm, as ever, and just a bit more belief will bring some victories.

Yr 5 Boys v Sefton Park

A new season. A new age group. But the same old Downs with a reassuringly familiar north/north-westerly to make the Foxes feel at home, playing two and winning two.

The squad was a little short of numbers due to the enforced attendance for 5 boys at a secret boot-camp but we were still able to field two equal strength teams of 8 a-side.

Team one (Alec - welcome back Alec - Archie, Sonny, Max, Ollie K, Seb, Sam L and Ollie C) took a little while to remember to keep their shape and support each other. However things settled down with Sonny slotting the first goal after good work from Sam. Sefton Park kept pressing but another goal from Sonny and two excellent finishes from Max saw us home 4-0.

Player of the week - Max.

Team two (Joey, Owen, Jack T, Jack C, Ian, Raul, Jacob and Nick) has already warmed up against the year 4s and so played with more structure from the start. Joey, who was everywhere, scored one goal and Raul deserved his two. There were impressive performances from Jack T and Ian, on his Foxes debut, at the back. 3-0 was a comfortable margin and it could have been more, particularly if we could have got a head on any one of our impressive corners.

It hardly seems possible that the summer hols have finished - but yes, we're back and raring to go for the new season.

There's not much to say, except a big THANK YOU for everyone's support last year, a great End of Season finale and a crackin' party at Goldbrick House.

Last year's Y6s will be sadly missed - but suffice to say we will be expecting the former Y6 parents to keep turning up at the Christmas and end of year bashes.

Year 4 Girls at the BLUs Tournament 20th June

What a great Tournamnet for the Foxes - it made my father's day and I don't even have a daughter.

We took a squad a 9 - Sophie Mc (Cpt), Anna D, Sophie C, Ella T, Molly H, Phoebe, Marielle, Emily C, Bryony - to play all comers at the BLUs Tournament.

Our group started with a 0-0 draw against Longwell Green U10s who ended up pipping us for second spot and a place in the semi. Then came a great 2-0 win against the BLU's Colts with goals from Anna D and Captain McConnell (and our best ever goal celebration).

We then played the giants from the land of St Nicks U10s who are really rather good and really very big. We may have lost this one but a win in our final group game would have given us a chance of progressing. Up came another BLUs side and it is fair to say that, if Phoebe's shot had gone in rather than hitting the post, a win would have been a fair result. In the end we had to settle for a draw and third place in a group of 5 - in an U10s Tournament. And we are only U9s in case you haven't noticed.

All the girls should be proud of themselves - because we are. All the way from Marielle in goal to the midfield trio we were excellent but Bryony deserved to be named player of the Tournament.

Foxes Win Medals At Rockleaze

Hugs, kisses, cheering and congratulations - and that was only on the sidelines as the talented lads from Y6 crashed their way into the final of the Rockleaze Tournament on Sunday. Hurrah!

Gabe Kerfoot became The Special One as he slotted a coolly taken shot past the Sefton Park goalkeeper in the last minute of the semi-final - putting the Foxes in the final and thus avoiding a heartbreaking penalty shoot-out. Well done Gabe.

And in the final against Rockleaze the boys were narrowly beaten by a well taken goal. But the boys certainly were not out played - we had our chances - and the game could have gone either way. Unfortunately, it went their way.

The day hadn't started quite so well for the Y6s. After a promising start in the first match against Golden Hill Sonics, the boys gifted the Sonics a draw and went on to lose their next game.

The coaches were about ready to put on their Foxy jackets and go home when the boys found their form and the goals began to flow. They finished second in their group - on goal difference. Their semi-final was against Sefton Park, who had beaten the boys - in a penalty shoot-out - in the semi-final of 2008 (not that we hold grudges - but revenge was sweet).

The whole squad played tremendously well and were a credit to the club: Kris Carr (captain), Hugo Cullum, Joe Feehily, Gabe Kerfoot, Ben Lawes, Eddie Marshall, Jamie McConnell, Harvey Morgan, Oliver Williams and Tom Wistow.

Head coach-in-chief Paul Williams said: "After a shaky start, to get to the final and lose narrowly to the strongest Rockleaze squad is a great achievement.

"We played some brilliant, high energy football which impressed the crowds and the other teams' managers. The coach of the Sonics rang me today to say how lucky they felt to get a draw against us, and how they felt that we were the best team they played against by far."

COME ON THE FOXES!

Other Foxes teams narrowly missed out on reaching the finals. Y5s won all their group games - a fantastic achievement - only to be knocked out in the semi-final. The Y4s were on fire in the group only to be beaten by Shire Colts (again) in the semi.

Y3s and Y2s looked impressive in their Festival of Football sections and all the children won medals.

The club and school should be proud of the good behaviour and sporting brilliance shown by all our teams on Sunday. Well done teams and a HUGE thank you to the coaches.

Training moved to grass beside St Monica's

Training tomorrow (Sat June 12) has been moved from our usual site near the cafe to the grassy area next to St Monica's (where school Sports Day used to be).

The move is due to the take over of the Downs by the Race For Life. We will return to our usual place next week.

Y3 Foxes gambol in St Nick's sunshine 5th June

In the sunshine of a Saturday afternoon 14 committed Foxes took on all-comers as Monty Nash stepped up from Year 2 to help bolster the two squads.

Westbury Park Blue Squad team of Henry, Stanley, Eddie, Ewan, Sam, Ludo and Matthew played five excellent matches. All the boys gave 100% effort and managed to keep their concentration for over 4 hours. WP Blue lost 3 games 1-0 and drew one game 0-0 and in each of these games it was very close with WP Blue probably having most of the pocession. With a little more luck in front of goal we could have won these games! In the final game against the best team, WP Blue lost quite heavily but we were reduced to five available players against six by that stage. During the tournament the boys really impressed with their commitment. WP Blue player of the tournament was Henry for his tireless running and sportsmanship despite some less than sporting tackling from some teams. A very large thank you to all the parents who came and watched despite the very hot weather and disapointing results.

Westbury Park Red Squad comprised Billy, Tee-Jay, Jack, Harrison, Joseph, Josh and Monty. Late starts and delays meant that our first match was nearly an hour late kicking off shortly after which we had to say goodbye to Billy. However the 6 players who remained played their hearts out! Josh passed beautifully as two excellent goals from Joseph and Harrison set us on our way to a 2-0 victory. A stunning long-range free-kick from Harrison put us within a whisker of winning our second, only for a late equaliser against the run of play to peg us back to 1-1. Jack and Monty set up Joseph perfectly for him to score two more and give us our next victory 2-0. By the 4th match tiredness was setting in, but great goals from TJ and Harrison brought our third win 2-1. And in the final match despite legs so tired they could barely move we still looked the better team, Monty just missing as we drew 0-0. Final result - played 5, won 3, drew 2. Unbeaten. Man of the tournament went to Monty for his fearless tackling, excellent passing and determination to run and run and run!

We could not be prouder of the effort everyone put in and the sporting way in which all the Foxes played. Some beautiful football played in the right spirit. Congratulations to all who took part.

Year 4s Do Us Proud At St Nicks

Well - after winning silverware at Thornbury and reaching the final at Clifton, being knocked out in the semi-final at St Nicks may feel like a let down. No such thing. Our 'Red Team' (Harri TD, Harry F, Joey, Ollie K, Sam L, Owen, Omar, Raul) did brilliantly well to finish second in a strong group of 7 teams. Lots of football, lots of hard work and a deserved place in the knock-out stages. The semi-final itself against a good St Nicks team could have gone either way, but the boys should be proud of what they achieved.

The 'Blue Team' (Jack T, Jacob, Max, Aidan, Danny, Nick, Sebastian, Archie) fought hard and should have won at least one game but three draws and three defeats was not enough to see them out of their group - but at no stage were they overpowered by any team.

The St Nicks Tournament is a great chance for the Foxes to to play teams we would otherwise never come across. Most of them play in competitive leagues and have been around for, oh, ages. So our overall performance was enough to make the coaches content old men.

Now onwards to Rockleaze....

Y2 shine at St Nick's Football Festival

Guest coach Platineo and regular Y2 coach Tamsin accompanied a squad of 8 Foxes to the St Nick's Tournament. As an U7 event this took the form of a Football Festival, but for those interested the stats were: Played 6, Won 4 Lost 2, Goals for 10, against 6.

Credit must go to all of the Y2 coaches this year. The whole squad were a joy to watch, all playing for the team and all making contributions. Joseph and Jude split the goalkeeping, both pulling of some fantastic saves, whilst Betty, Lulu and Alex provided the stable platform at the back allowing Eesa and Sam Rowland to roam the midfield, and Josh Jarvis to score goal after goal. Sam, Alex, Jude and Joseph also found the back of the net.

Fantastic stuff, with no mistakes at either end.

Special mention must also go to Archie Watts and Ben Jarvis, who took on the role of 1st team coaches, and set out positions and subs for the whole morning. Brilliant!

Year 6 boys come close at Thornbury and Clifton

The last two weekends have seen some great Foxes action from the year 6 boys at tournaments at Thornbury and Clifton.

At Thornbury both squads reached the semi finals of their tournaments only to narrowly miss out on a crack at the trophy in the final on penalties. It was a cold and windy day and many thanks to all our supporters who braved the elements to cheer on the teams!

At Clifton despite remaining unbeaten in the group matches the Foxes finished second and then faced the academy boys from Jamie Shore. The Foxes played their hearts out, went a goal up when Gabe scored and only went out of the tournament when Jamie Shore scored twice late on. It was a memorable day for the team (who could forget the incredible strike from Kris against the Sonics? even though we once again were narrowly beaten so close to glory.

And so our thoughts turn to Rockleaze. Bring it on!

Y4 Boys Miss Out In Thrilling Clifton Final

Congratulations to the Y4 boys who came so close to winning the Clifton United Tournament at the weekend.

The team, consisting of Jack Clarke, Jacob and Raul Gibson, Ollie Kieran, Sam Lawes, Joey Martin-Tulloch, Sonny Singh, Max Thrasher (capt), Archie Watts and Danny Wistow, played superbly well and were unlucky to miss out on victory in the final. Danny hit the post and in a three-on-three extra time Sam came so close to scoring.

Y4s Crowned "Best Of The Rest" At Thornbury

Congratulations to the Y4 boys for their success in the Thornbury Tournament last weekend.

The team, consisting of Aidan, Harry, SamL, Joey, Max, Seb, Archie and Danny, scooped the Consolation Cup.

On their journey to the final they won their first ever penalty shoot-out sudden death (hurrah) and beat the other Foxes' Y4 team in the semi-final (a bitter-sweet moment for us all).

And well done to all the Foxes teams who played at Thornbury - their effort and behaviour was a credit to the club.

COME ON THE FOXES! - and good luck at the Clifton Tournament this Sunday.

Footie Festival A Real Winner

The first-ever Festival of Football between the children of Westbury Park and Bishop Road schools turned out to be a real winner last Sunday(Apr25).

Fine weather, good food, excellent beer and friendships forged - and the footie wasn't bad either.

We at the Foxes would like to thank everyone at Bishop Road for embracing the idea of an all inclusive and friendly football festival between the schools. Our one hope now is that we can do it all again next year.

**Thanks to everyone who baked and bought for the cake sale - Tupperware boxes will be brought to football on Saturday.

**A large quantity of lost property was picked up from the pitches after the Festival. This will be left - with the Tupperware - behind the Y4 goals on Saturday. Please rummage.

Joseph beat off stiff competition from Year Fourers Nicholas Blatchford and Owen Paton to smash home the winning spot-kick and claim his Mars Bar prize.

This Saturday (April 3) will see training for the Y2s only as all other Foxes coaches sag off and enjoy a rare weekend lie in.

The following Saturday (April 10) will see the start of intense and prolonged penalty shoot-out practice in preparation for tournament-time.

And the last weekend of the holiday (April 17) - well, who knows, anything could happen.

Yr 4 Boys End On A Winning Note

So that's the last of the friendly league fixtures for this season - and what a good season it has been for the Foxes. The year fours have been impressive throughout and ended on a high by capturing two wins from two games away against Clifton Utd.

The first game saw a comfortable 3-1 win with goals from Danny, Raul and Nick, finishing off a great passing move with a precision shot. Good performances all round with Aidan and Ollie C tying up Clifton's attacks, Archie and Nick rampaging forward, Ollie K snuffing out any threat in midfield, Danny his usual busy self and Raul leading the line very effectively.

The second game was a more comfortable victory with Sonny (6) Harri and Joey scoring in an 8-0 win. Again The Foxes passed and moved well but still paid attention to defending when Clifton won possession. Highlights included a penalty save by Danny, Owen and Sebastian organising the defence, Joey as skillful and committed as ever, Max a threat on the right and Jack weaving magic on the left.

Well played everyone. Now it's Tournament season.....

Year 6 boys continue winning ways at Clifton

Despite missing a number of key players the Foxes turned in an excellent team performance to win at Clifton. There were many stand-out players in the squad: at the back Adam and Kris were maginificent. Adam is now turning out consistently strong defensive games whenever he plays and he is a great battler with good positional sense and Kris was a rock at the back reading the game brilliantly. Tom W excelled in goal and again his positional sense is the best in the squad often cutting out dangerous moves with one deft touch. Oliver W and Eddie produced great passing moves. Gabe scored two - one a great header - and Jack made his first touch count in his one chance which he converted superbly. Oliver B played well in midfield and Oliver D turned on the style as his dad was watching! Finally James was a star: determined, pacey and always competitive. The results went our way and deservedly so. Two frustrating draws (1-1, Gabe scoring and the Foxes conceding a late but excellent Clifton goal, and 0-0, where really a win would have been a fair result) were followed by an excellent 2-0 victory with Jack and Gabe on the score sheet.

The comedy award went to Adam for his Run-Away Haynes moment in front of goal - pure comic genius - and star player this week was Kris.

Paul and Andy were again delighted with the passing moves, the great defensive play and spirit of the whole team. With the Thornbury tournament approaching in May we are confident of a good showing if we can keep this up. Well done to everyone!

Year 4s v Golden Hill Sonics, Saturday 13th March

Bathed in glorious sunshine the Foxes won 3 and lost 1.

The Sonics, like our previous 2 opponents, seemed to pick 'A' and 'B' squads while we mixed things up in an attempt to field two even sides.

Ewan's team [Max, Aidan, Sonny, Omar, Sam L, Ollie K, Archie, Raul] started well in their game against Sonics 'B' winning 7-0, and perhaps should have scored more. A hat trick for Raul, 2 for Sam Lawes and one each for Omar and Sonny accounted for the goals. The Foxes passed and moved it very well (especially between the midfield and front players) and Ollie K snuffed out most of their attacks.

The second game against the stronger Sonics was a much closer affair, which we won 3-1 with the goals coming from an own goal following an excellent corner whipped in by Sam L, Omar scoring after another corner caused chaos in the opposition box, and then a goal which deserves a proper description: only Archie, who was everywhere throughout that game and man of the match, can honestly say whether his blast from 20yards out was a pass or a shot (I'm sure he will claim a pass however), but in any event Omar hit it first time on the volley from 10 yards out and it flew into the top corner. The Sonics then rallied a bit, got a goal backed and pressed for more, but Ollie K kept them out (in a strong outing in goal) and we were able to keep the ball and get it forward enough to see out the game quite comfortably.

Graham's team (Owen, Seb, Jack T, Joey, Jack C, Danny and Ollie C and Nick) did everything they needed to and more in the first half against Sonic's 'A' before throwing it all away. Nick really sparkled on the left wing and we went 3 up with goals from Danny, Joey and Jack C. However, and perhaps not for the first time this season, the boys edged from 'confident' to 'over confident' in the second half and the Sonics started to break well while all the Foxes were desperate to score. The only person to get back and help was Joey who ran himself into the ground but he could not stop us conceding 4 second half goals.

In Game 2, and aware of the likely reaction of the club's chairman to the first result, Graham gave the team a strong pre-match talking-to. This seemed to work and they managed to concentrate for the whole game, winning 5-1 with goals from Danny (2), Joey (2) and Nick.

Player of the week - Nick, with an honourable mention to Ollie C for a strong showing on the right wing.

Sport Relief Mile

Well done and thank you everyone who took part in the Westbury Park Foxes does the Sport Relief Mile Challenge on Saturday.

Together we raised £378.88. All the money will go to Sport Relief.

And thank you those who supped at Holly Ogborne's Temporary Tea Bar. She raised about £40 for the NSPCC.

Y3 versus Golden Hill Sonics Saturday 13th March Report #2

What a day for football! The sun was shining, the temperature was above freezing for a change and 18 eager foxes turned up, keen to play against the mighty sonics....

Team: Rohan, Josh, Stanley, Matthew, Jack, William W, Eddie, Caston, Ludo, TJ

Two great games played in a fine spirit. 1st game was a game of 2 halves. Tj started the scoring with a beautifully taken goal after great approach play from Caston. The sonics soon hit back with some skillful passing that found a way through the foxes tenacious defence. The second half saw the sonics better organised and they managed to pierce the foxes defence, this in despite of some incisive defending from William and great goalkeeping from Rohan. A couple more goals followed in quick succession through the Sonics well organised attacking line up. The foxes managed to get one back with the final kick of the game.. an exquisite free kick from the left by Ludo that looped into the top right hand corner. final score 2-4 to the sonics.

2nd game. The valiant foxes didn't let their heads drop for a moment following the result of the first and they set about probing and attacking the sonics defensive lines. Josh was unlucky to see a well struck shot rebound off the post. TJ worked tirelessly alongside Caston in midfield, sticking close to the sonics danger players. Eddie was his usual dependable defensive self repelling anything the sonics could throw at the foxes. Stanley troubled the sonics down the wing. Rohan and William maintaining order and calm in the midfield. Jack had a fine game in goal with some brave shot stopping. Matthew held his defensive line well and cleared many troublesome balls.

A sonics goal was soon cancelled out by a great stroke from Stanley. and the deadlock was almost broken at the end of the game with some clever play from Josh on the byline as he managed to thread a neat ball to ludo who shaved the crossbar with a great shot. So end of game honours even but a wonderful display from every single one of the foxes players who played so well as a team and were a real credit to
the foxes name.

Man of the match. Caston. A tireless display, a great example of what man to man marking can achieve in preventing counter attacks and bravery following a ball to the face!! well done!

Y3 versus Golden Hill Sonics Saturday 13th March

The beautiful game on a beautiful Saturday morning against two very good Golden HillSonics' teams. Too good by half from the kick-off: our initial timidity in defense gave time and space to the sonics' forwards and they scored three (count 'em) early goals. But the foxes were not to be demoralised and soon regrouped, gaining a goal courtesy of Henry's ever powerful right foot. Unfortunately half-time substitutions and a controversial rotation policy didn't help to settle our defence (blame the coach) and we conceded three (count 'em again more goals. Again the Foxes fought back, Ewan and Sammy H battling hard in midfield, and excellent goalkeeping from William L-P, keeping the skillful Sonics at bay. It wasn't long before Harrison, working tirelessly between defence and attack, fed Joseph whose confident strike restored some pride to a scoreline which probably exaggerated the difference between the two teams, even if the result was fair. Final score 6-2.

The second match was a different story. Gone were the defensive frailties and the "Total Football" Foxes came to life. It would be only a minor exaggeration to say the ball rarely left the sonic's half. Billy's trademark calmness and control in a defensive midfield role, Harrison's tactical awareness and Brody's tenacity tracking back typified the performance. Ok, so the sonics scored first, a result of our hesitancy to clear the ball (the Foxes Achilles' Heel?) in the face of a concerted attack by the Golden Hillers. But the response was unequivocal - an equally concerted counter-attack confidently finished by Joseph. The Foxes continued to repel the Sonics' attacks, pouring forward every time and came close to breaking the deadlock on several occasions, including a spectacular long-range "William L-P Special" free-kick bouncing off the post. The Foxes confidence grew and the second half began with another even more stunning long-range effort ricocheting off the crossbar, this time courtesy of Sammy H. Fortunately Harrison, again running all the way from defense, was in the right place at the right time to hammer it into the roof of the net. A Foxes classic came next with an excellent tackle and dribble by Billy feeding Harrison on the left wing who in turn passed to Joseph. After beating two defenders he made no mistake with his shot. The Sonics tried to mount a comeback but even their impressive individual skill and excellent teamwork struggled against Teya and Ewan, solid in defense, and Henry, yet again showing his versatility as goalkeeper. Inevitably, the Sonics' pressure yielded a goal, albeit a controversial one (with some Foxes unconvinced the WHOLE of the ball crossed the WHOLE of the line) but rather than argue with the ref the response was another goal courtesy of, well, pretty much the whole team, but finished by Joseph, completing his first hatrick (count 'em) in a competitive match. Final score of 4-2 to the Foxes.

Year 4s V Ashley Down, 6th March

The games having been coming thick and fast and your correspondent has slipped behind in writing the match reports. The chairman has had a quiet word and things will improve. Or else.

The Downs seemed to be covered in Foxy year fours as the girls fielded two squads to play Bishop Road and the boys did the same to face Ashley Down. Two squads, four games, four wins. Happy days.

Ashley Down seemed to split into 'A' and 'B' teams and the results reflected that split.

Ewan and Dave T's squad dominated possession in their first game and then gradually began to create chances through good interplay and passing. Eventually the deadlock was broken by a crisp 4 pass move from the back which saw Jack C finish off at close range. A second was added by a similar move moments later, this time with Omar finishing off. In the second half Ashley Down rallied and began to play some good stuff scoring from a well taken free kick and the final 5 minutes were close fought and intense. The Foxes created more chances, kept the ball well and just about deserved to win 2-1.

The second game came to life with Joey's spectacular early strike which was then cancelled out by a breakaway goal by the visitors, finished off in style. After that the Foxes raised their game and in the end, with 2 each for Joey, Omar, and Jack and one for Harri TD, ran out comfortable 7-1 winners. Highlights were a very solid debut in goal for Max, a very robust and committed performance all over the pitch from Harri, and a typically composed and skillful display in defence and elsewhere from Sebastian. But player of the week for this squad for his quick and incisive attacking, passing and linking play was Jack C.

Graham and Andy's squad played Ashely Down 'B' first up and ran out comfortable 7-0winners. Highlights included a hatrick from Danny (none of which were scored from further out than a metre and one was a header that was almost on - or was it already over? - the goaline), two from Sonny and one each from Archie and Ollie K (a fabulous first time screamer from the halfway line). The team started well and then lost a bit of concentration as the game wore on and probably should have made more of it dominance.

The second game was much, much closer with Ashley Down playing competitive, good quality football and the Foxes getting stronger as the game went on. Goals from Sam L and Sonny secured a 2-1 win but credit must also go to strong defence from Aidan, Jack T and Nick and all round good movement and passing. Player of the week was Aidan for an impressive display.

Great Foxes performance leaves coaches purring in delight

The year 6 boys continued their impressive form since Christmas with a fantastic display against Golden Hill Sonics despite being deprived of the services of Kris, Ben and Jamie. But the rest of the squad stepped up to the mark with three matches against a strong Sonics squad.

The first game ended 3-3 with the Foxes scoring through Gabe, Lukha and Oliver W. Gabe's sublime cross shot was a great strike, Lukha was in the right place at the right time to slot in at the far post and Oliver hit a 20 hard screamer on the volley leaving the keeper no chance. A great and competitive match enjoyed by everyone. The second game saw the Foxes in a 0-1 reverse, and unluckily so, having conceded a breakaway goal and being unable to convert any of the chances they created.

But like last week the Foxes left the best until last and played a sublime 15 minutes which left Paul and Andy standing in admiration on the sidelines. The match even included two set piece goals which we had worked on in training. How good does that makes us feel?! The Sonics took the lead with a breakaway and cross shot that somehow sneaked in at the near post. But Gabe levelled soon after, racing onto a superb pass from Eddie to hit the target. 1-1 at half time. In the second half Jack unexpectedly found himself with the ball after a defensive slip-up: he still had a lot to do but he punished the error by shooting in coolly. Then Gabe returned to the fray under strict instructions to finish the game off for us. We will issue those instructions again as he skipped past three defenders with his first touch and shot a lovely curling (and left foot!) shot into the far corner. Next up it was Eddie attacking a near post corner straight off our training pitch. Great delivery from Gabe, fantastic header from Eddie. 4-1. Now it was Foxes, Foxes all the way. James H made a brilliant tackle to thwart a Sonics attack, turned, found Eddie who raced into space before delivering a pin-point pass to Gabe who fired in a great hat-trick. Surely there was no time for more. Well, there was. Another corner. Another great delivery from Gabe, another outstanding header from Eddie and we had a sixth. Final score 6-1 in a breathless and brilliant display.

Lukha picked up star player for playing out of his skin but there were great performances all over the pitch. Comedy award went to Oliver B (a big welcome Oliver to the Foxes at last!) for his general fun attitude. But well done to all the squad - Tom , Danny, Oliver B, Oliver D, Oliver W, Gabe, Eddie, Jack, Lukha, Adam, James and Harvey. Paul and Andy were proud of you!
