Year 6 - Seven Go to Devon - Jubilee Weekend
Back in the depths of winter, Coach Wistow suggested a tournament trip to the sunny North Devon coast. The Bideford and Appledore Blues 6-a-side tournament was scheduled for the Jubilee weekend at their idyllically located ground next to the Westward Ho! dunes. A weekend of camping, surfing and footy under a baking June sun looked irresistible.
Come Saturday evening, in a wind and rain swept field outside Ilfracombe, the resolve of some of the brave campers was wavering, but surely it would clear up for the tournament on Sunday? “Fail to prepare, prepare to fail” is what the top coaches say. So with Wenger-ian precision the seven strong Y6 squad (Danny, Harri, Max, Archie, Sam L, Owen, Jack C) were put through a rigorous training programme consisting of:- staying up late chatting in a campervan, (for some) a morning’s bodyboarding at Woolacombe, a large and rushed pub lunch, then a dash to the tournament so that we arrived late and had to re-arrange our opening fixture.
The friendly hosts were delighted to see us and play commenced, with strong winds and driving rain off the Atlantic forcing most spectators to huddle under the clubhouse eaves. The Foxes, still digesting their crisps, cheese and carvery leftovers, got off to a sluggish start and conceded an early goal in their first game. Once they had grasped the intricate tournament rules (including roll-ins instead of corners, throws or goal kicks), they settled down and Danny was put through to strike a fine equaliser. After that opening draw, a 2-0 win followed in the next game, the highlight being a beautiful long diagonal ball finished by Jack from the left side. The Foxes faced one of the host club’s teams in the group decider. The game was goalless with 2 minutes to go, when a blocked free kick rolled to Owen some 15 (or possibly 50) yards out to win it with a monstrous left foot drive into the bottom corner.
The Foxes cruised through their semi-final, winning 2-0 with 2 more goals from an inspired Danny. Having knocked out all the local teams, the final was contested by the Foxes and the other “tourist” team – the formidable FC Highnam from Gloucestershire, league and cup champions in their home county. In driving rain which made Rockleaze 2011 seem like Ibiza, it was a game too far for the brave Bristolians, and after losing an early goal and a questionable penalty for a “goalie out of his box” rule infringement, it eventually finished 0-3. Runners-up shields were handed out in the warmth of the clubhouse, and all the boys deserved their hearty applause for a magnificent effort.
Where they led, others will follow. Apart from the weather, this was a cracking trip and tournament, and highly recommended to all Foxes years (the tournament has multiple age categories) who fancy a seaside, surfing and soccer camping trip next “summer”.

Year 6 - Thornbury Tournament, 26th May - Foxes win the Plate
So 16 Foxes travelled to Thornbury. In contrast to our previous experience of this Tournament, where we have come against a good variety of teams from far and wide, our two teams were only up against 6 other sides, four of which came from the host club.
Two groups of four and the Greens and Whites both got off to winning starts.
The Whites (Owen, Ollie K, Seb, Sam P, Sam L, Joey, Jacob and Raul) came out on top 2-0 in their first game against opposition from Thornbury. A rather disjointed and cranky display in the second game against the second Thornbury side in the group led to a defeat and while we played with much more spirit in the final group game, the only goal went to Rockleaze. One win, two defeats. Third place.
The Greens (Archie, Harri, Aidan, Harry, Danny, Jack C, Max, Omar) beat Thorbury 1-0, drew with the other Thornbury side 0-0 and lost to the Sonics 1-0. One win, one draw and one defeat. Third place.
On to the semifinals in the plate where both sides overcame teams from Thornbury and set up a Foxes v Foxes final. This proved to be the best game we played in and ended in an inevitable 1-1 draw. Penalties and the Greens emerged victorious. Max lifted the trophy amid an ice-cream celebration.

Year 6 - Clifton Tournament, 20th May
A great day that ended with us just short of taking home the cup.
The year 6s were split into two squads, mixing up the BSYL sides to good effect:
The Greens - Omar (cpt), Archie, Jacob, Sonny, Max, Seb, Harri, Sam P and Jack T were drawn in a strong group and did really well to win two and draw two, including a fantastic 1-1 draw against the eventuall group winners, Golden Hill Sonics 'A's. Highlights included a net-ripping goal by Harri, a great team goal finished off by Jacob, goals from Omar and Sonny and solid defence from Seb, Sam and Jack.
The Whites - Sam L (cpt), Owen, Ollie K, Ollie C, Nick, Joey, Danny, Jack C, Aidan, Raul went through their group unbeaten and without conceding a goal. Highlights included a great hatrick from Raul, a goal from the kick off by Joey without the opposition touching the ball and some great all round team play.
The semi-final pitted the Foxes v Foxes and the Whites came out on top with two goals from free kicks, one with a neat finish by Sam and the other an unstoppable top-corner effort by Joey which even Archie couldn't reach.
So to the final. The Whites had beaten the Buccaneers in the group-stage and had the best of the possession throughout the game. A moment of defensive indecision (which was completely out of character) gave the Buccaneers their one chance which they took well. The second half saw constant pressure from the Foxes and a moment of tension at the end when Nick was brought down in the box but the referee judged that the defenders had touched the ball before the man.
Runners-up for the third year - but the squad should be proud of the way they played and that we can field two teams that were both strong enough to reach the semi-finals. Well done all.

Y5 Foxes win the Clifton United Tournament!!!!
Sunday 20th May. The Y5 Foxes played brilliantly to go one better than last year and win the Clifton United Tournament - their first silverware and the first silverware won by a Y5 Foxes team!
We entered two squads. The Greens - Caleb, Rohan, Brody, William W, William LP, Josh, Ewan, Oskar and Jamie - played brilliantly. They beat Whitchurch 3-0 and Clifton United Green 4-0, losing only to Shire Colts, to gain a place in the semi-finals.
The White squad - Harrison, Caston, Henry, Joseph, Stanley, Tee-Jay, Eddie, Jack and Matthew also played some blinding football to beat Ingleside 2-0, Golden Hill Sonics 4-0 and Clifton United Yellow 4-0 to top their league.
The coaches' nightmare then followed as the two Foxes squads played each other in the semi-final. The whites won through to the final but only after some resilient play from the battling greens.
In the final, the Foxes Whites got of to a flying start again Shire Colts, scoring in the first minutes. Another could and should have followed. The Foxes then dominated the match but could not add to their lead - being cleared off the line and only being kept out by some superb Shire goal-keeping. Despite a tense few final minutes, Foxes held on to win 1-0 and lift their first trophy. A thoroughly deserved victory for a team that scored 16 goals and kept a clean sheet.
Many congratulations to everyone who played - a brilliant achievement by both squads and always in a great sporting spirit! You make us proud!

Year 6 BSYL - CUP FINAL, 27th April
It's been a long time coming but finally the year 6 Foxes captured a trophy in a thrilling, closely fought final against Stoke Lane for the BSYL U11 Challenge Cup on Friday.
Stoke Lane started strongest with some nice passing football using the full width of the pitch to put the Foxes under great pressure. Ollie K and Nick stood strong in defence and after soaking up a fair amount of pressure we scored two great breakaway goals. The first began with a slick combination between Danny and Omar and the second, a great move from Jack C down the left wing, followed by quick passing via Omar again who laid a perfect pass across the box for Foxes' Captain Harry to crisply finish.
The second half started with the Foxes full of confidence and once more Danny opened up the Stoke Lane defence and a composed Omar finished well. 3-0 to the Foxes but Stoke Lane heads didn't drop and playing some fine passing football started creating chances and were rewarded with a great volleyed goal from a corner. Another Stoke Lane goal followed, again from a corner and with 10 minutes to go the Foxes had no option but to defend their slender lead. Ollie C, Max and Sam P gave the Foxes fresh vigour and a great save in the last few minutes from Archie allowed the Foxes to hang on for a thrilling victory. Great credit must go to Stoke Lane in a hard but fair game that brought out the best in both teams.
The coaches are so proud of what the whole sqaud has achieved across a long and competitive season. All of the boys, be they Green or White, have done the club proud.

Year 6 BSYL - Cup v Shire Colts 23rd April
The Foxes came out on top of a very competitive game played in wet and windy conditions. With the advantage of the slope the Foxes started the stronger but over-committed at a corner allowing Shire to break and Josh Bailey to score. Having learnt this lesson the Foxes took greater care at the back with Nick and Ollie outstanding in front of the ever reliable Archie Watts. The midfield trio of Jack, Danny and either Ollie C or Harry F caused a constant threat and up front Omar Ror Max T worked hard to put the Shire defence under constant pressure.
The equaliser came when a well-taken free kick by Danny came back off the keeper for Jack C to slot home and then minutes later Harry F finished well from a deep cross from Jack C on the left .
The second half saw Shire throw everything forward and eventually the Foxes made full use of a good break when Ollie C crossed for Danny to finish. 3-1. Sam P and Jack T came off the bench to add fresh legs and help the Foxes to see out a great win.

Year 6 Friendly - Clifton Utd - 21st April
A freindly against Clifton Utd and a good chance to mix up the Greens and Whites and involve some of the girls squad. A game of four quarters saw Clifton take the lead before Jack C finshed with a well judged lob over the advancing keeper. Danny wriggled free in the box to slip the ball inside the near post and slick passing provided Raul with a chance that he finsihed well.
