Saturday 31st January - a busy weekend of football

Saturday 31st January sees years 2-5 in action.

Year 2 will be playing Rockleaze Rangers at Combe Dingle while years 3 and 4 will be playing Rockleaze at Stoke Lodge. Check out the Rockleaze Rangers website on Saturday morning to make sure their pitches are playable. If not we will be on the Downs.

Year 5 will be on the Downs come hell or high water, again playing Rockleaze. The year 3 girls take on Thornbury Falcons on the Downs while the year 5 girls play Bristol Union LFC on the astroturfat RGS.

All of our home games will definitely be on so just turn up as usual.

C'mon the Foxes.

Year Three Boys vs Sefton Scorpions, 24th January

Another set of good performances by the boys as the girls took the chance to put in some extra training. In all we played four games, winning two and drawing two.

The two draws (0-0 and 2-2) were hard fought affairs played on the 'big' pitch, while our wins (5-0 and 8-0) came on the smaller pitch. The coaches' report highlighted the need for us to think about passing more often and having thought about it actually do it. As always we worked hard, tackled and supported each other and took our goals well.

Player of the week came from Dave T's team. In Dave's (edited) words: in the the second game we as a team were pushing too far forward and leaving huge gaps at the back forcing our keeper into a string of good saves, one of which could be compared to the great Gordon Banks world cup save with even Sefton Park Parents remarking 'what a great save' . Player of the week was Danny.

Year 3s V Sefton Scorpions - Match Report

In Match One it's fair to say we "thumped 'em". We won 8-0 (although one of the goals was a touch high - shocking decision by the ref, I'll be kicking myself all week). I lost track of all those who scored, but Danny, Omar, Sam L and Raul were amongst the goals. I also seem to remember that Harri TD scored from a long shot, but as I was ref-ing I can't be sure.

Match Two, on the big pitch, was a closer affair. In fact, it was a draw, 2-2. We scored first - FROM A CORNER! Danny took the corner and Nick scored at the near post. The coach rather shockingly had Max in goal (Max wanted to) and he was called into action when we gave away a penalty - we can't complain, it was definitely a pen. Much to his Dad's surprise Max dived well and almost saved a well taken penalty. And he made two more good saves in this half. We ended the half with a well worked goal. It started with a clearence from our goalie found a Foxy midfielder and three passes and players later, Someone scored. I wish I could remember who! Second half and Danny was in goal. We as a team were pushing too far forward and leaving huge gaps at the back forcing Danny into a string of good saves - one of which could be compared to the great Gordon Banks World Cup save, with even Sefton Park parents remarking, "What a great save" (I could be paraphrasing here). But finally with Danny facing three Sefton Scorps and all our defenders up the other end they scored with a good low shot to his right. We carried on pressing, but were hurt by not knowing when to release the ball. So a good draw but lots to work on.

A great team effort with all the boys playing well, but of course, I put the success down to a good tactical display by the coaching staff.

Year Three Boys vs Long Ashton

The boys played really well on Saturday, winning three and drawing one against Long Ashton.

In both opening games we took full advantage of being used to the playing conditions on the Downs (Long Ashton had the disadvantage of training and playing on smooth surfaces). We won both games - one 5-1 with Sonny scoring all of our goals and the other 5-2 with goals by Omar (2), Danny (2) and Sam L.

The second round of games saw a very exciting 3-3 draw and another victory, this time 6-0, including a great finish (and perhaps even better celebration) by Jack.

The coaches were particularly pleased with the passing and movement, great examples being a run and pass in the one game by Alec that led to Sonny scoring and a similar contribution by Raul ending in Danny scoring.

Two players stood out for their all round performances and it is no coincidence that they were involved in our best passing moments - Alec and Raul are the players of the week.

Year Three Girls vs St Nicks, 17th January

What a great game and how well all of our seven girls played. St Nicks are a club that have a long tradition of producing strong girls' teams and their u8s looked no exception. With at least four players missing it was great that we could field a team. Sacha was playing her first game for the u8 girls, Sophie HR, Phoebe and Emily C only their second and it was only Bryony and the Annas (R and D) who played with us last season.

The result (a 7-0 defeat) doesn't really tell the whole story. Once we had sorted out our goal kick routine the game was much closer. In the end both Phoebe and Anna D came really close to scoring and I'm sure we will break our scoring duck in the next game.

Everyone did brilliantly - Emily C making a number of brave saves in the first half, Sacha and Sophie tackling hard and Anna. Anna and Bryony working hard in midfield. Player of the match though was Phoebe for her running with the ball and fearless tackling.

Well done all.
