Y2 Easter success at Bristol Rover's U7 tournament 7 April

The Easter break brought an invitation for a squad of 7 little Foxes to the first ever Bristol Rover's U7 5-a-side tournament at Filton. 12 teams entered. Most from long-established clubs. There were new rules, a new surface and purpose-built pitches to get used to. Despite never having been in a tournament before, the Y2 Foxes played brilliantly.

In the group stages, we played 3 matches. First up were Clevedon Town. The Foxes romped into the lead. They played a flowing, passing game which lead to goals from Harrison and Henry to put us 2-1 up at half time. In the second half, Joseph latched on to a stunning back-heel from Harrison to put us further ahead. Although Clevedon scored again, the result was never in doubt and we won a stylish game, 3-2.

Next up, Coombe Dingle's A team. Again we roared into the lead, Harrison burying a rebound from Joseph's first shot. Despite trying to play lovely passing football we were pegged back. Josh, Jago, Henry, Eddie and TJ helped defend magnificently and it was all to play for in the second half. Unfortunately the contest was ruined by some extraordinarily poor refereeing, including the introduction of new rules half way through the match. The result was that 3 "dodgy" goals were allowed and we went down 1-4. Despite the set-back, the Foxes were the first to congratulate their opposition in a very sporting manner.

The final group game saw a mismatch with a young scratch team from Shire Colts. They were a mix of Y1 and Y2 players. Sadly no match for the Foxes. Josh scored a hat-trick, Henry bagged a brace, Harrison scored his 3rd goal of the day and TJ and Jago both scored to make the final result 8-0. All played in a very friendly atmosphere.

As group runners-up, we went into a quarter final against Stoke Lane. The Foxes dominated from the start with more flowing, passing football. Countless shots went close and only a magnificent individual effort by the Stoke Lane keeper kept them in the match. With full time and penalties approaching, Joseph broke the deadlock and the Foxes won 1-0.

Our semi-final opponents were the mighty Bristol Rovers Football Club. By far the best team in the tournament, they played with authority and skill. The Foxes tackled their hearts out and some magnificent passing deserved a couple of goals. Jago was brilliant in goal, but the opposition were just too good and we eventually lost 0-5. It was some consolation that BRFC went on to win the final 6-1.

For a small school team to have done so well against so many bigger, more-established clubs is a fabulous achievement. Thanks to all who made themselves available, supported or played. A proud day for the Foxes!

Squad - Jago, Josh, Joseph, Harrison, Henry, TJ, Eddie.
Players of the week - Henry & Jago.

Sleepy Foxes

Backwell 2 WPF 0
Backwell 1 WPF 3

The Y5 Girls had a difficult away tie at Backwell. As funds wouldn't stretch to an overnight stay (or an early morning flight) the girls had an early start to get to the ground. With Conkers suspended, (or was that 'at Brownie camp'), Annie had to take over between the sticks, requiring a shuffle in the back line, and it wasn't long before her first task was to pick the ball out of the net as the sleepy Foxes were caught napping as Backwell passed the ball through them and walked into the box to coolly slot home. As if that wasn't bad enough, from the Foxes restart, the same thing happened again. Two down in as many minutes, did I not like that!
The girls finally woke up and to their credit started to play with more confidence, restricting Backwell to few further chances whilst poor finishing on our occasional forward forays let us down. The rest of the game remained goalless.
After a 10 minute break, Backwell brought on a new team for match two. It seemed as history was repeating itself as the Foxes watched as Backwell broke forward and casually stroked the ball home. This finally provided the spur to the Foxes, who started to dominate, but once again poor finishing let us down. The second half was a different matter with the Foxes laying siege to the Backwell goal. The equalizer came from a well taken run and shot from Imi, and from then on it was one way traffic. Daisy slotted home from a goal mouth mix up and Jodie blasted home from the edge of the box to seal a deserved Foxes win.
Well done to Captain K for filling in at the back, where she and Ollie P formed a good pairing, and to Imi who ran tirelessly covering the whole pitch, and showed great commitment to winning the ball.

No football next week, but we have a match on the 18th v Frampton Rangers (venue to be confirmed)

Year 3 vs Coombe Dingle, 28th March

Year Three were back on the Downs for the first time in, oh, ages and it was reassuring to feel the familiar northerly wind and the patter of hail on our heads.

For the first time in, oh, ages the Year Threes were unable to field two squads from our boys alone. A trip to Egypt, a Beaver fun-day-away-day-activity-day day and some undisclosed ailments left the boys a few players short. Without much disruption we brought some of our tournament-winning girls in and it was great to see them play - indeed Sophie Mc, Emily T, Anna D and Bryony were among our best players overall.

Anyway, if last week against Bishop Road was a game too far then this set of fixtures, for one of the squads at least, was one even further. Two equal squads, two very different sets of performances. The coaches could only look on in horror at a 3-1 defeat swiftly followed by another, this time 5-0. Jack Clarke took his goal well but the boys didn't really seem that bothered about anything much apart from arguing amongst themselves. Hopefully the Easter break will settle some of the team down.

The other squad, however, did the Foxes proud. 2-0 down against a strong Coombe Dingle side could have turned into much worse but a great fight-back with goals from Omar and Raul earned a well deserves draw. The second game also ended 2-2. it was end to end stuff, the Foxes passing well, tackling hard and showing some good individual touches. An early goal from Raul couldn't stop us trailing 2-1 into the final seconds. Bizarrely, the Coombe Dingle keeper came up for a corner and Nick, having won the ball and spotting an empty net, coolly struck the ball three-quarters of the length of the pitch to score, despite a desperate dive by the retreating keeper. A very exciting finish to a great game that showed that we can play decent football and compete with good sides, which Coombe Dingle undoubtedly are.

Players of the week Sophie Mc and Sonny.

Year five boys face tough opposition at Coombe Dingle

The year 5 boys faced tough opposition against a strong Coombe Dingle side but Andy and Paul were very pleased at the commitment and effort showed by the boys. We divided into two squads to play a Coombe Dingle first and second team. The first game resulted in a disapponting defeat (0-4) although after conceding three very early goals the team showed great character to keep Coombe Dingle at bay for the rest of the game. We then fought out a close 0-0 draw with Coombe Dingle's first team before again slipping to a 0-2 defeat in the third game.

But in the last game the Foxes came good winning 2-0 with a magnificent goal from Ben (Oliver W slipping the ball to Gabe in midfield, a slick first touch pass onto Eddie on the run down the right and another inch-perfect raking ball into the path of Ben on a perfectly timed diagonal run behind the defence, rounding the keeper in one movement and turning the ball crisply into the net...4 players, 5 touches, 5 seconds from beginning to end...quite brilliant and very exciting to watch!) and a wonderful curling shot from Oliver W into the corner of the net.

Harvey earned player of the week for an outstanding performance at the back - his positional play and timing in the tackle were excellent and he was a real inspiration to the rest of his team.

Paul and Andy are looking forward to the Thornbury tournament on 10 May - we will have a number of training sessions before then to work on our game but we are confident we will be very competitive on the day.

Up the Foxes!
