BGL u13 Portishead Juniors 1 v 4 Westbury Park Foxes

Foxes take runners up spot to remain Bristol's best!

With the sun finally shining a full strength Foxes squad made the trip to Portishead in a winner takes all game for the BGL runners up slot.

Knowing that the home side had to win, the Foxes opted to use a similar formation to the one that had worked so well last week. With Betty in goal, the back line had plenty of pace as Millie T slotted into the centre with Lulu and Emily and Rhiannon dropped back into their more familiar fullback roles.
The front four had Zoe and Lauren start in the centre with Mara and Ella on the flanks.

The formation worked perfectly as the Foxes defence marshalled  the Portishead front 2 two to perfection, stealing the ball off their toes time and again to keep the home side pinned back.
The Foxes recycled well, but they too met stubborn resistance from the back line, but soon the away celebrations started as Zoe evaded the challenge of a defender to fire home the opener from the right side of the box.
An injury to Ella sent the goalscorer to the right flank as Sim came on to play through the middle.
Soon the lead was doubled. Having saved one corner at point blank range from Sim, the defence were again under pressure from the set piece and could not prevent an own goal as Lulu whipped an in
swinging corner over the front post defender.
Portishead had to go for it, and forced some territorial advantage, but were unable to create any clear cut shooting opportunities.
Molly replaced Zoe as the heat started to take it toll and the Foxes ended the half well ahead.
Amelia replaced Lauren at the break as the playmaker took a breather.

The second half had barely started when the Foxes extended the lead further. A fantastic through ball found Sim who won the 50:50 with the keeper to make the game safe.

The Foxes again rang the changes,  with Emily moving to midfield and Ella W joining at left back.
Again the Foxes enjoyed some great possession, but Portishead countered, and when the  home forward went down in the box, the linesman flagged and the referee confirmed. Harsh perhaps, but we've all seen them given!
The Foxes keeper hadn't really had a save to make, but continued her fine record against spot kicks, saving the penalty low to the right, and seeing the rebound fired past the post.

Portishead did eventually get a consolation goal, before the Foxes again struck with the final kick of the game as a flowing passing move again had Sim played in to beat the keeper and square for Mara to tap in.

So a great end to another fantastic season. The Foxes have shown they remain the premier girls team in Bristol, with the best defensive record and, ultimately the title decided on an evenly matched '6 pointer' at Wotton.

11 a side beckons, will it be 4-4-2, 3-5-1 or the midfield diamond? All suggestions welcomed!

Bring on the Buffet! Come on the Foxes!

Captain of the Week: Ella B

Girls of the Game: Lulu and Betty
