Successful end to summer tournament season

It was, quite literally, a whole new ball game. Acres of space, giant goalposts, and a "back four" with full backs "bombing on". It is a pleasure to report that the U13 girl Foxes resisted any temptation to "send it long, into the mixer". They maintained their impressive passing, shape and movement in their first foray into the grown up world of 4-4-2, 3-5-2 and coaches being unable to see all the action without the aid of binoculars.

Keynsham Town Girls FC know how to host a friendly tournament and look after their guests. With the full use of the 'Stadio Keynshamio', complete with grandstand, clubhouse, licensed bar, tuck shop, state-of-the-art 4G pitch and even some delicious Chinese food from local sponsor 'Hotcha' takeaway, the Foxes and the other 11-a-side debutants were made to feel very welcome. They even laid on six hours of blazing sunshine, and free coaching from the Football Fundamentals guys. So it was that four of next season's U14 Bristol Girls League sides enjoyed a hugely rewarding and friendly introduction to the big version of the game. With generous gaps in between games, the Foxes played a total of 120 minutes (sssh! - don't tell the FA) of expansive 11-a-side, against the Keynsham hosts, Longwell Green and the newly formed Fry Club FC.

It was an excellent opportunity for four of the five new Foxes recruits. The management have been very active, and successful, in the transfer market. The Keynsham trip saw debuts for Olivia, Lily S, Abby and Georgia, and they all performed admirably. Abby slotted effortlessly into central defence, showing superb touch and control in everything she did. Olivia was a barnstorming addition to midfield, bursting from deep to score more than once, and even successfully assuming penalty duty. Lily was (another) speedy pint-sized assassin down the wing, while Georgia displayed her versatility and technical ability in both defence and midfield.

The 'old regulars' played their part too - 'ZoeSim' resumed their deadly strike partnership in the wide open spaces, Runaway Rhiannon clocked up 9K on her Fitbit, while Emily was powerful and unbeatable at left back. No-one was fazed by the big spaces and two extra players - habitual 'mighty minis' Mara and Ella could still beat players at will down the wing, while Molly and Amelia W soon got into their stride, winning tackles and chasing down the opposition to regain possession. Lauren performed well in an unfamiliar central midfield role, partnering the brave Lulu (with injured foot) and Olivia. Again, the Foxes adapted in the absence of regular shotstopper Betty, with a revolving cast of keepers keeping a collective clean sheet for the whole day: thank you Amelia, Lulu, Ella and Emily H.

The details of the games are less important than the overall performances. Yes, we scored a few goals and didn't concede one. Yes, it's another team trophy, and individual trophies, for the groaning cabinets and shelves. But the most important thing was the ease with which every player adapted to the new format, with little loss of shape and no shortage of skill and pace on display. All the games were sporting and tough, with hugely improved hosts Keynsham proving particularly formidable opposition. The Foxes edged them 1-0 in both the group game and the final, but they will be tough opponents for anyone in next year's BGL.

All in all, despite some parents and coaches being caught wholly unprepared by the unfamiliar hot bright thing in the sky which burned their skin, it was a cracking day for everyone. Only 8 weeks to go until the new season starts! We can hardly wait - but in the meantime, everyone should enjoy a great summer break, keep in trim and report to the Downs for training in September, or even next Saturday if they're really keen....
