BGL u12 Westbury Park Foxes 1 v 3 Portishead Town

Fine Foxes performance undone at the end!

The first fixture of the U12a split and the Foxes faced the only team to inflict defeat this season.
Despite the 3-2 match away, the girls were convinced that the home conditions would suit better.

The girls started brightly and forced the early running, with a couple of chances going wide. With tails up the girls were quick to the tackle and breakdown, and the new defensive system seemed to be mopping up all the Portishead counter attacking play. It was a cruel therefore to go a goal behind as a failed corner clearance fell to the opposition midfielder who made no mistake from close range.

The girls continued to push forward and played some great football, but were unable to make the possession count and the half ended 0-1.

Half time and encouragement to keep playing with the same style for the next half hour and we were sure the reward would come.

Sure enough in the opening 5 minutes the Foxes were level after a great run and pull back found Mara to lash home at the back post.

With the tie level and confidence high the Foxes were keen to push home the advantage. The goal however had stung Portishead back to life and they launched a continuous phase of pressure that penned the Foxes back.
The Foxes managed to break out, but when Ella was fouled on the edge of the box the referee waved play on and allowed Portishead to break back past the prostrate winger and feed the tall striker who lashed home. Cruel on the Foxes…….

With time running out the home side had to through caution ( and Daisy) forward in an attempt to salvage something from the game, and were caught out by a breakaway as the tall away striker scored with the last kick of the game.

So a disappointing end game that could have home either way, but the girls played fantastically well and shouldn't be too own heartened as sometimes you play well and lose and others you play badly and win.
