Year 4 vs Shire Colts, Saturday 27th February

A rearranged fixture from an early postponement that grew from one set of games to two and resulted in the Foxes winning two, drawing one and losing just one.

As always (I'm sure I've used that term before) the Foxes split into two equal squads and, thanks to the generosity of the fabulous year sixes, were able to set up two pitches to accommodate the visitors.

Squad one (Owen, Ollie C, Harri TD, Nick, Ollie K, Sam L, Omar, Jacob, Raul and Alec) started their fixtures well with a 3-2 win. A great goal from Raul and some fine defensive work from Nick and Ollie C and goalkeeping of the highest order from Owen saw us into a 1-0 lead. However a little indiscipline led to a loss of shape and Shire Colts scored two well taken goals. At this point Ollie C charged forward from his defensive position - and despite the best efforts of his coaches who were calling him back - scored a well-deserved equaliser and then celebrated in style. The Foxes now played with some reassuring control and Raul tucked away the winner late on to earn the win.

The second game was played in terrible conditions as the hail started and while we created some good chances and Owen and his defenders kept Shire Colts at bay for long periods we ended up losing 6-o with Shire Colts scoring some well worked goals.

Player of the week from this squad was Owen for his exemplary keeping in difficult conditions.

The other squad (for arguments sake - Squad X)consisted of Archie, Jack T., Sebastian, Aidan, Danny, Joey, Jack C., Max and Sonny.

In the first game Shire Colts started well and in fact deserved to score but for a fantastic goalkeeping display from Archie who pulled off a string of good saves. The Foxes almost got away with it but we did concede before half-time from a corner. The second half saw the Foxes up their game, keeping their shape and with Sonny up front holding the ball up with good midfield support from Danny,Jack C and Joey we started to trouble the away side. Some good good passing football resulted in Jack C scoring a well taken goal followed by a second from Sonny. A well earned 2-1 victory.

The second game should have been won by the Foxes. We kept our shape much better and troubled the visitors with Sonny again holding the ball up well for midfield runners but often we didn't release the ball quick enough. The Shire Colts keeper had a great game and limited the early damage, when the Foxes should have moved the game beyond the reach of the away side. In the end Sonny's two good goals were cancelled out by an equal number by Shire Colts. So 2-2 it ended then.

Player of the week from this squad was Archie for another great performance.

Shire Colts are a strong and a very good passing side who 'came out of the blocks' far quicker than the Foxes but overall we matched them and deserved the balance of the results to be in our favour.
